New Colors in Phoenix |
|
|
Posted by Sid from NJ on Thu Oct 2 12:08:16 2008 I took a couple of photos of some new colors on buses in the Phoenix area last week.First we have the new DASH scheme, mentioned in previous posts: ![]() Next is what may be the new Tempe Flash scheme (or lack thereof); sorry, the sun was on the other side! ![]() Finally, although not a bus, here's a look at a light rail train:

Why is it that only the light rail train is the only thing that bears the Valley Metro logo? Last I checked, the FLASH, and DASH are still part of Valley Metro as well. |

Yep the Phoenix divisions use "old-style" single line destination sign readings. In 2002 they experimented with double-line destination sign readings (like those used by the Tempe and Regional divisions) but they went back to the old single-line destination sign readings. Tempe has also gone to a single-line destination sign reading as well. |

IIRC the rear of the DASH buses have the Valley Metro website on there. The FLASH, ORBIT, and TIM house color (6181) buses have an ultra-simple paint scheme consisting of solid base paint, numbers, and logo decals. Honestly, I cannot stand 6187's paint scheme. At least they could keep the Maroon and Gold colors-which are the colors of Arizona State University. The "olive green" color scheme is just nasty. |

Nice pics!4166 apparently has a smaller grille covering the LNG tank in the rear (with the reduced space being used to display the Valley Metro website). Also these buses have been fully rehabbed with new windows and seat cushions (they needed a good cleaning as they were quite dusty inside). 6187 has the second worst color scheme in the entire Phoenix metropolitan area. The first is 6181, which is the Tempe In Motion house "color" scheme, although originally it was the Tempe in Motion 10th Anniversary bus and had attractive rainbow handprints all over the exterior of the bus (I had one just behind the rear door). They were removed after a year because they were peeling off and now the bus is in an ultra-dull canvas scheme. Although the FLASH runs around Arizona State University, ASU's colors are maroon and gold, not this awful green color scheme that they have now. If they wanted to be cheap and paint the bus a single color scheme with number and logo decals, at least they could have painted it all maroon. Note that the Orbit buses have a similar color scheme design but with an attractive darker blue, which at least has some reference to the bus name (blue is supposed to invoke thoughts of outer space). However, the green on the FLASH bus makes me think of nothing but vomit. Honestly I think the Valley Metro scheme that 6184-6186 and 6188 are in (these buses have no fareboxes and are FLASH buses despite having the Valley Metro standard green and purple) is way better than that thing. On the other hand, the METRO Light Rail colors are very attractive (they are of course similar to the RAPID color scheme). When Valley Metro was thinking about their new color scheme in 2006 I thought that they would repaint all of their vehicles in this attractive metallic green and silver scheme. The new Valley MetroLink (arterial BRT) color scheme also looks nice, although I honestly think they should have named it RAPID like the corresponding Phoenix service. |

Finally, although not a bus, here's a look at a light rail trainGreat catch! I believe they only recently began testing the three-car trains. Usually they are single- and double-car trains. |

Back when they repainted 6187, I saw it as a marketing campaign by Tempe to appear "green."The image by Sid from NJ makes the green look darker that I believe it really is. 6187 has the second worst color scheme in the entire Phoenix metropolitan area. The first is 6181... Really? I actually think the all-white 6181 does not look bad. The color makes it seem fresh and new. |
