I agree with you that the columns should match the tiling which is what the MTA is trying to do now. It makes the station's look prettier.

I was talking about a suggestion made 50 years ago, not one I am making now. At that time there was no attempt to hatch columns to tile. All the columns were painted olive drab green on the bottom and off white on top. There was a program to repaint them all. They were all repainted blue on the outside and yellow on the inside. I saw no reason for every column to be painted the same way so I suggested painting them to match the colors then in effect. Where two lines shared a track alternate columns would have had the same color. It would have provided useful information since you could easily tell which track to wait on. Remember, the color system was different back them with trunk lines having more than one color.

It was a good idea at that time since the columns were all being repainted anyway and there really was no significant additional cost. That does not mean it is a good idea today.
