Once in a while this board receives highly speculative topics, a bit like fantasy sports. The odds are pretty strong against Mangano and TransDev agreeing on the purchase of non-standardized equipment. About twenty years ago, MSBA or LI Bus purchased large vans for lightly-served routes. These were kept only a few years. As traction companies learned with open-bench summer cars, it is better to have a single type of vehicle, so that it can cover all types of runs.

I must also recall two unfortunate side effects of purchasing artics, even though I like them. On Manhattan crosstown routes, I think their introduction has been used to reduce staffing by increasing the headway. Maybe four years ago, I attended a NYCTRC meeting where an outspoken committee member from the Upper East Side objected to those lengthened headways. Also, ten years ago I chose to ride an artic on the Grand Concourse limited north about 4 p.m., when schools let out. It was a unpleasant, slow crawl, with single-front-door loading and single rear-door unloading. I have since traveled on a three-door artic on the Bx9, somewhat faster, but we did not have school kids boarding.
