71st Avenue/Continental Ave

Would These Last 2 Stations with the R/V/G be able to work with a extended C?

The Montauk Branch can't be converted to subway without add at least one more track, possibly 2. The line is very needed for freight, and close to 100% of Long Island's (Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk) frieght traverses the Montauk Branch. Turning those tracks over to the subway, and throwing of the frieght is not an option, and subway and freight can't share the same tracks. It's dead int he water.

I want the park. The ROW is dead as a rail line and too close to private property to make a go of it unless you bury the line and stack the tracks one on top of the other.

In that area, a park enhances property values, gives NYC more "green lung" to help with air quality, and is well worth the relatively modest amounts they are going to spend on it. It's bargain.

Although it probably could be reopened, I doubt it is necessary with the airtrain being fairly close by and in what most uses would have as the south end of the rockaway branch anyway. Just hook airtrain up to whatever you intend to do with the south end of the line.

How so? The ROW is currently an improved, grade eliminated rail line up on an enbankment. You would have to tear the entire enbankment down, and then go further yet if they want it under ground, not to mentione tunneling or cut and covering over the intersections which now have a rail tressle over them, would need to have a tunnel under them.
That's totally dead in the water.

The Rockaway line would indeed serve better than Woodhaven Blvd for light rail, as you really couldn't afford to lose traffic lanes on Woodhaven Blvd, not to mention the Rockaway line is already grade seperated.

The ROckaway Line parallels Woodhaven Blvd for it's length and is already grade seperated, so it would be the logical chice for such a route instead. Not to mention that you can't afford to lose traffic lanes on Woodhaven Blvd itself. There's no reason to build it there when a block or two away is the Rockaway line, already grade seperated, and much safer.

It would be perfect for a nice quiet LRT that would actually increase land values for the NIMBYs.

Run it through a tunnel after Whitepot and continue to Woodside LIRR station. The south terminal could be placed in the center of Howard Beach/JFK subway station (the tracks could pass under the northbound subway track north of Aqueduct.)

That's what I was thinking all along. A unique idea would be to have the V and C switch at W4 and the V to run this circular route in both directions during its service hours. Since the V doesn't run nights, such a service wouldn't affect the NIMBYs. The merge with the QB local line would occur at 63rd.

NIMBYs wouldn't want a submerged line either.

ANY transit added to that corridor wouldn't satisfy them. Why not go with the least objectionable option -- a LRT?

Where exactly are these narrow points you speak of? I can't seem to find them; most of the ROW seems to be able to support two LRT tracks plus station platforms, canopies, etc.

Now if the ROW needs to be widened anywhere, it only needs to be widened a few feet. So the residents get their backyards chopped back a few feet. Big deal.

Note I didn't take the NIMBYs into account. That's because they will automatically oppose ANY transit built on this corridor, submerged or not. I'm proposing the least objectionable option for the Rockaway branch -- a LRT.

Some NIMBYs would not, it's true. But you shrink the number of NIMBYs by submerging the line.

You missed the places where private property comes fifty feet or closer to the ROW.

Maybe LRT has better tolerances, so my objection could be moot there.

Didn't it have two tracks between Whitepot and Atlantic when it was running back in the day? If the ROW as narrowed since it means that people ilegally extended their yard onto the ROW which is public property. I would have done the same since it's abandoned and the City is right about not enforcing it at present, but if this line ever gets re-activated they need to be pushed back onto their property.

"There is already a rather large park around there. "

True satement but it does not help you. A rail line there is politically not possible (and fiscally not possible given the backlog of projects and available budget). A park and trail which expands on existing park property is far better than leaving the ROW the way it is.
