I've known Unca Larry for over a decade, back in the days when he was a DBA at Macy's. He built this place as an experiment to begin with. To see if he could replicate Unca Dave's Linux database in Microsoft. It was a success. And he's been playing with it ever since. But like a GOOD coder, he knew when it didn't need to be screwed with any further aside from housekeeping behind the scenes. He's been tweaking it ever since as it continues to grow and grow and test the boundaries. I'm sure it was quite useful as he moved on to better things.That said though ... I think Larry watches over us like the Lord ... and is also continually amused by his "creation" ... :)

SubTalk was great, what made this place great is that it had all the things everyone loved about SubTalk AND has an Off Topic board. What ruined SubTalk is the fact that many wanted to discuss things other than rail topics with other railfans they became friends with on SubTalk. After all, there's way more to life than just trains, and friends want to talk about other things.But of course, that made the non rail things take over the on topic board which was not good, and Dave had a constant job of removing them in order to keep the train board clean for those that just wanted that, and it probably made his life miserable. The off topic board solved that problem here. I have to admit, that my first post here at OTChat was that I didn't think it work. Boy was I wrong. |

I had met Unca Larry before Dave had his blowout and I had plenty of faith in his wisdom when he went and did this. But yeah, if Dave wasn't so anal, he could have easily solved all the problems over there. What I miss most about it going away was how tightly integrated the photo portion of the board was with the forum. If a poorly labelled pix turned up, it got fixed quickly.I'm not all that big on trains, playing with the real thing kinda cures that stuff. And knowing how the railroad worked for real also made me roll my eyes a lot when the fantasies break forth. Only reason why I ever did the train boards is that railroad people are really cool folks normally, and despite the foamers, it's always nice to NOT be foaming and hanging out with them. But Unca Larry really created something mighty special here, and there's nothing I personally appreciate more than his hands-off approach and basically telling the anal HERE to stick it where the sun don't shine. Heh. Sometimes, not having adults in the room can be a good thing. :) |
