TA personell really need to lighten up!!!

Posted by lrg5784 on Mon Nov 16 22:18:39 2009

Today at 4:33 I caught an R32 (R) train at 95th Street and rode it all the way to Queens Plaza and recorded a video of the train leaving the station. As soon as I stopped recording, I ran up the stairs to catch an R160 (E) train to head back home. All of a sudden, some tower dispatcher at Queens Plaza chases after me when I attempt to catch my train back home because I recorded a video of the train. He yelled at me to delete it, even after I tried coaxing him and trying to show him the rules on photography, but to no avail. I was basically forced to delete a good video of an R32 (R) train at my loss, dealing with 1: impolite TA workers, and 2: TA workers that don't even know the own rules of the system that they work for.

This is getting ridiculous. Not even cops behave this way to railfans. But all seriousness, TA workers need to know the rules of their own dang system and need to treat their customers with politeness. No wonder why tourists aren't taking this city seriously....

Comments? Suggestions? And if you don't have any constructive feedback, DO NOT RESPOND! You know who you are....

I doubt that I would have deleted it, but I don't blame you for doing so. As bad as losing the video is, it might not be worth the aggravation.

What do you want us to say? How the hell can a NYCT worker make you delete footage? Makes no sense.

He can get in a lot of trouble for this.

He threatened to have the cops come after me. He also thought I was running away from him, when in fact I was trying to catch the (E) train to Manhattan at the other platform.

I don't know, but like I said to other posters, he threatened to bring the cops into the matter. I tried to show him the rules but he was being real hostile. I'm going back to Queens Plaza this week and if I see him again, I'll have the tables turned on him.

yes you did. you could've said "I want your pass number and want to speak to your superintendent RIGHT NOW!".

i mean, if are serious about pursuing this beyond Subchat.com this is not a dead issue. this guy can be written up on a long list of charges, if your side of the story holds up.

Okay, I'll take that account next time. I'm heading up to Queens Plaza sometime this week just so I can run into this guy again. I should have told a cop at the station but I really didn't know if he would have been in my favor or not.

If he thought that you were doing something illegal then he should have called the cops. I doubt that what he did is what they tell him to do. He would have had to call the cops to make me delete my video. If he's a mf'er he can try and take it if he wants.

Next time, ask for a TSS to respond to the scene. You can try your luck with police supervision as well, but since this was an MTA employee, might as well invite their supervision in ... I'm sure it'd beat having to respond to a BIE for the lucky individual. :)

The guy was from the tower dispatcher office at Queens plaza. He was wearing regular clothes. I'm pretty certain the cops would have helped but they can't now unless I go back and run into the guy again.

Person was obviously trying to follow what THEY thought the rules are. Calling a Train Service Supervisor (TSS) to the site would permit the proper "reinstruction" to occur. Our "respondent" was trained to call it in, not to confront directly. Reinstruction is obviously required here.

I know you lost some video which is unfortunate. However, I do understand that you may have done so because you didn't want end up on the wrong side of an escalating incident. Sometimes, although you're right, it could be wise to do what's necessary to avoid any trouble.

Still, you don't pull that type of crap with minors. Minors and adults are two different entities. However, there is still a right way as to respond to the situation.

You're close enough in age that it'd be hard to tell, and you weren't with your parents so I wouldn't bother with that angle. Here's what you need to know so that you can POLITELY challenge the person in question should it happen again. Tell them simply that the rules of conduct SPECIFICALLY allow photography and that if there's a problem, he should call his own supervision and request that a Train Service Supervisor be called down to explain the rules to his satisfaction and that you'll wait. It'll take probably 30-40 minutes for a TSS to get there unless one is there already.

Tell him that there's a bulletin on "suspicious activity" and HIS rules state that if "suspicious activity" occurs, he is to contact control and "call it in." The TSS will tell him the same thing and be able to cite the bulletin number which this person has apparently failed to read and comprehend. But once you get snitty or combatitive, you can tell it to the police. Play it right, or don't play it at all.

Bmt pretty much summed it up......
Dare him to call the cops.....the avg response time would be at least 10 minutes......by the time police respond, you would be in another borough.......
One thing I would NOT have done is delete the photos or video......

You would be surprised that a lot of ta personnel think it is illegal to take photos down here.....I'd bet more than half believe that......
