"You Can't Sit Down": CTA

Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Wed Jul 16 22:44:30 2008

Quick, go to the basement and dig up "You Can't Sit Down" by Phil Upchurch. "Holy Bat Man" in honor of the movie shot mainly in Chicago. I'm shaking my head. Chicago has long been a bastion of the transverse seat. The latest 3200 series cars only has single seats on one side....heard it was to widen the aisles to allow for wheelchair access. Then the CTA surveyed riders and claimed that overwhelmingly the rider's choice was for longitudnal seats...called "bowling alley seats" back in the day. Bet some of the more larger sized sistahs weighted in heavily on that one.

Now Channel 9 in its 9 pm newcasts headlined that the CTA is planning to take out all the seats in some rush hour trains...yes, all the seats in some cars. The Brown line would be first with the Red and Blue to follow.

"You Can't Sit Down........"

Channel 9 is conducting a call-in right now.

CTA to experiment with seatless rush-hour train cars
By Jon Hilkevitch | Chicago Tribune reporter
3:39 PM CDT, July 16, 2008
Ushering in a new era of the cattle car, the CTA plans to eliminate all the seats on some cars of rush-hour trains to pack in more riders who are otherwise left standing on crowded rail platforms, officials said Wednesday.

The standing-room-only rail cars would begin operating by the fall on the Brown Line, CTA President Ron Huberman told the transit agency's board.

Last month, ridership rose 7 percent compared with June 2007, CTA officials said. Although that may not seem such a dramatic change, many rush-hour trains have been packed with riders for years.

Changes to the current seating configuration are under review, but it's likely that an eight-car train would include at least two contiguous cars without seats, Huberman said. Elderly, disabled and pregnant passengers could opt to ride in the cars with seating, he said.

Most CTA trains can accommodate up to about 90 riders per car. By yanking out seats and eliminating the aisle, dozens of additional passengers would fit, officials said.

The CTA began considering alternative seating several years ago when it tested a train car with more center-facing seats.

Stripping out all the seats from some train cars is not the CTA's preference in terms of customer service, Huberman said. But with ridership increasing each month—in large part because of soaring gasoline prices and a new requirement to provide free rides to senior citizens—the transit agency is unable to afford more service.

Ridership among senior citizens has jumped 25 percent since March, when the free-ride program took effect.

This is a SHAME, why would they do this? Are they trying to run a fascist railroad????? I was joking before about the TA ordering the next cars without seats, but now it seems like a realit!!!! No customer service these days. SHAME. McAdoo would never allow this. Also, it is the BS signalling system which slows the trains down..

Does anyone know of any passenger vehicles, besides elevators and escelators maybe, that are standup. Oh, yes, standup roller coasters are excluded, L>OL.

Airport people movers have a very limited number of seats.

WMATA considered a similar proposal, removing all the seats in the car except for about 12. Riders pretty much said don't even think about it, especially those coming in from the suburbs.

Interesting you say this, i think it must be uncomfortable to operate a train like an R160 while standing due to the position of the MC, but on the older SMEE equiptment, it is easier to stand, and some "motorpeeps" prefer standing to sitting.

How is it "unprofessional" exactly? It makes a lot of sense given the restricted train length they encounter on many lines. Removing seats, or going to jump seats could make a lot of sense, especially if they're locked up during the peak periods to make for a maximum loading. You keep glorifying Japanese systems, yet there are subways in and around Tokyo which have (or at least had) seating that flipped up during rush hours to result in a nearly standee-only car. Are you saying that those systems are similarly 'unprofessional'?

The worst part is that ridership on the CTA is lower than ridership in NY and DC.

An apples to oranges comparison if there ever was one. Exactly how many billions of dollars have been invested in DC since 1976? And how much has been invested in Chicago in the same time? If Chicago had the fairy godcongress there to lavish it with cash I'm sure it'd have resurrected the Roarin Elgin to Aurora and the North Shore to Milwaukee, but that is not the case. Additionally the Chicago L fulfills more of a traditional subway role in concert with Metra, while WMATA attempts to be both a subway and a commuter train and generally fails at both.

Thanks, I was looking for any other systems that tried or suggested such.

I bet along with this idea is the end to speculation that the Brown and Orange lines would get combined once the Brown line capacity enhancement is finished. The Brown line's ridership growth is far outstripping that of the Orange.

The other Chicago problem is car shortage.

Can't speak for 160's, only time I ever ran an NTT was for a couple of stops on a set of newly-arrived 143's. There, I sat as instructed. When I ran arnines and 32's, have to admit I preferred to sit until my ass fell asleep and then I'd stand for a while. The older cars had a bench seat which folded up onto the rear bulkhead. And the rules were (imagine they still are) when you were operating in the YARD and/or through a work zone, you were REQUIRED to operate standing. What I actually tended to do more often than not though was drop the bench and lean against it, somewhere between fully standing and sitting. That worked best for me.

When I first saw the post, I thought to myself, "oh noes! they're yanking the bench from the cabs!" Heh. But there's all I can offer ya for a FACTUAL comment. :)

This is one of the reasons that I admire the old BMT Corporation - they took passenger comfort into account when designing cars like the Standards, Triplexes and Bluebirds. Ridership levels were also much higher back then. Today it seems that transit agencies couldn't care less about comfort. They have no competition and a captive audience and are becoming more and more arrogant about it. Not everyone can stand for extended periods.

maybe they can fit completely on some lines? They should be able to run skokie swift, and PA cars are FAST cars, and can hit 70 MPH when not neutered. How much do the current CTA cars weight though? PATH PA cars weigh about 60 or 70 thousand pounds...

The worst part is that ridership on the CTA is lower than ridership in NY and DC.

Ridership on all transit systems in the US is lower than that of NYC and DC, they are 1-2 in terms of average daily ridership on their subways. I guess all subways other than NYC and DC are going to be pathetic and horribly run in your view if you use that logic.

I agree with the principle in general, but I don't think permanently removing all the seats from the cars is a good idea.

WillD posted about Japanese subway cars with seats that flip up during rush hours to create a "nearly standee-only car". Perhaps the CTA should look into that.

Not neccesarily...PATH K-Cars were the same width at the platform level, so the PA cars can be too, the thing is that the sides buldge out going up towards the "belly" or "belt" of the car, though this should be no problem, sinc the CTA cars are wider above platform level too.
