flag decals

Posted by WaHiIND on Sun Aug 6 12:30:46 2006

Hi all,

Looking to collect any and all information on the story behind the flag decals that adorn all of the NYCTA passenger subway cars...

Was it a worker/line-manager inspired initiative (shortly after the 911 massacre) to modify the trains accordingly? Or, did the idea come down from on high from the senior management of MTA's ivory towers?

Some other question I have are...

How much did this modification cost?

How long it take after 911 to role this mod out to the entire passenger car fleet?

Which firm won the contract to supply the flag decals?

~~~
Here are my measurements of a flag decal taken from an R44-series car on the IND 8th Avenue Line:
21-3/4" wide X 11-1/2" high.
The blue field of the flag is 8" wide X 6" high.
The flag decal is situated 2" below the car's 4-digit serial number placard. The car's serial number placard is 21-3/4" wide X 8" high.
The total height from the top of the serial number placard to the bottom of the flag decal is 22-1/2".
The flag decals on the R38-series cars on the IND 8th Avenue Line are smaller.
Since most of the cars of the IRT West Side Line (the 1 train) have a 4" high rectangular solid-red decal directly below the car's serial number placard, the flag decal is placed 2" below the solid-red decal.
~~~

I've notice that the white portion (stars and stripes) of the flag decals on the R44-series cars of the IND 8th Avenue Line, which I have seen, have become light yellow due to the elements/weather. Are weathered flag decals actively replaced with new ones?

~~~
Side topic: Which firm won the contract to supply the "NYC Olympics in 2012" decals for the passenger cars?
Thanks!
Tom
NOPE.
The Flag decals have been in use since the 1980s
That is false. Flags began to appear on NYCT cars AFTER 9/11.
I only remember the Flag decals being used on the MTA equiptment after 9/11.
Not before then?
I need a little more enlightenment if possible.
Are you saying that the measurements were taken from a flag on a car or you took the flag from the car and then measured it?
Thanks for the clarifying question.
The measurements were taken from a flag decal that was stuck on a car - not from flag decal that was first removed from a car. I walked up to a given R44-series car with a tape measure. I only took one or two measurements at a time and then hopped into the car. I went up to three or four different R44-series cars with my tape measure in order to get all of the measurements that I've listed.
At last I remember before the double deckers were put into service. Those cars had painted or etched flags. Not decals.
They were removed on almost all MUs, and only lasted on the old deisel cars. 9609-10 or 9611-12 still have the old decals(when i first noticed the cars, i didnt realize that the LIRR didnt use NYCT style pair numbers. maybe its both pairs.)
Would you have info on the "flag decal" story of the NYCT subway passenger cars?
The R32s use a smaller decal due to the corrugations. Most R33/36 MLs and R36 WFs recieved them as well. 9584-5 is an exception. Since most of the R26/28/29s and some R33/36 MLs were scrapped prior to 9/11/01, they did not recieved the flags.
