When you are writing something complex, no matter how careful you are, an error or two might get through.You can't equate that type of error with someone who fabricates a story as Brian Williams did. Last month I saw the movie "The Witness" about the Kitty Genovese murder in 1964. For 50 years everyone was told there were 38 eyewitnesses who did not call the police based on a single NY Times story that was untrue. No one wanted to challenge the writer because he was so well respected as was the newspaper. Twelve years of research by the victim's brother revealed the news story to be a fabrication. In fact there was only one eyewitness and he did call the police. The worst part was that the writer knew at the time that the story was false but went with it anyway just to sell newspapers. |
