It doesn't matter if they are needed or not - Federal regulations are not going to change because of a couple of yuppies in LIC

LION is a long time proponent of a three-tier flat tax system.

Under $100,000 = 10% tax
$100.001 to #1,000,000 = 15% tax
Over $1,000,001 = 20% tax

(Or whatever percentages are required to fund government. My numbers are explanatory and fungible.)

Then: EVERYBODY uses the short form. All tax deductions are eliminated (except, of course for personal tax exemptions). Deductions and credits are a source of fraud and loopholes, and need to be closed.

BUSINESS taxes should be 1% or less OF GROSS.

First they are a hidden tax on consumers, since they are always passed along.

Second they are a fraud: Income taxes in business are currently based on profit after expenses. And who decides what THAT is. The business, of course.

Third, in the business world, it is the STOCKHOLDER who is the ultimate owner of the business, and all real profits should accrue to the stockholder WHO DOES PAY INCOME TAX ON THOSE PROFITS.

Thus ROARS the LION.

Replace "left" with "right" and you'd be describing yourself. Can you kindly explain how a majority position is "left of" everyone else on the planet?

I suppose that it's pretty pointless to try and explain anything; you've already demonstrated that you're way off on the lunatic right when you tried to justify locking up innocent people based on your misinterpretation of some archaic rules of war that certainly don't apply when dealing with accused criminals.

And on a completely unrelated note, I want the fucking <font> tag back, dammit! If I need to format text in a SubChat post, I'm going to use it until no browsers on the planet support it, and my web design professor can go eat a bag of style attributes!

This has been said. But it is not so.

Most contributions, such as to churches are by people who use the short form, and therefore do not deduct contributions anyway.

Further, a deduction is not taken from your tax paid, but off the top of your taxable income. Thus if you make $52,000 a year and donate $1,000, your taxable income becomes $51,000. Assuming a tax rate of 15% you pay 7800 in taxes on the 52,000 and 7650 on an income of 51,000, a saving of $150. That on your $1000 donation.

Ergo PEOPLE DO NOT GIVE because of tax benefits.
Ergo PEOPLE GIVE BECAUSE THE BELIEVE IN THE CAUSE.

WE give to charity in the substantial five figures, and we get no tax benefits for doing so. We give a substantial amount (high four figures) directly to indigent persons who appear here at the Abbey, and there is NO tax credit for donations to individuals.

We are the recipient of other people's giving, and our gifts are not down due to the economy nor do we expect that they would be affected by tax laws.

The LION does not accept your notion that the loss of a tax write off for charitable giving will eliminate or even reduce the substantial charitable giving offered by Americans to those persons in need of for causes that depend on charitable giving.

IAWTP. I don't give for the tax write-off. Whether my parish church, the Franciscans in NYC, the local ambulance corps, etc., I would give regardless of the tax deduction. I can't take it with me, so it is time to disburse it.

People captured on a battlefield are NOT accused criminals, they are enemy combatants, and are held under the conventions of war. Some (most in this conflict) are free agents without uniform, command structure, or government upon whose behest they engage in combat, thus these are NOT covered by the rules and conventions of combat, but may be shot at once. That we have not done so, but have treated them under the conventions of combat demonstrates OUR COMPASSION for them.

They will undoubtedly be released when the conflicts are over and stability and government have returned to their homelands. Then at such a time the said government of said countries will either try them for violations of law or will release them back into society.

The United States has and does continue to act, for the most part, in a humane and responsible manner with regards to said persons. They are NOT an issue for US law and courts. We have detained them, and will continue to detain them until the above conditions are met.

If you want inhumane detentions, then you need look no further than Adolf and Joseph.

Apparently you can't shut the engines off on the new LIRR diesels. The constant noise was why people in Montauk were complaining. I guess they are a lot louder than the old diesels.

Every time I am on the LIRR heading into the city, and see those ridiculous lofts overlooking the yard, I can only wonder who in their right mind would spend that kind of money to live there.

The MTA really can't do much to reasonably accommodate the residents until that very distant day when LIC is either electrified or closed.

Hunterspoint Ave is the terminal for many diesel runs to and from Eastern Long Island. As long as there is diesel service on the island, the need for LIC will be there. It's not a matter of "electrifying" to LIC....LIC already has electrification, if I am not mistaken.

Heh.

NJT is experimenting with the concept on the PL42's.

One concept they should consider is what's done at modern truck stops. Modern 18-wheeler truck cabs have significant power needs, which would require the engine to idle all the time. Overnight stays can be accomodated by providing an adaptor which would bypass the engine and power the electrical equipment via a land-based power system. Since diesel locomotives need to keep powered only to prevent their fuel from freezing and to maintain power to the passanger cars, this seems, at least to me, a viable alternative to constant idling. I'm not geeky enough to know how/why this might not work.

You're both right and both wrong.

There is electrification to LIC via Main Line to the Montauk Line, i.e., a trains heads west from HPA then switches over to the Montauk Line (south side of LIC terminal) at 11 St.

The northern side of LIC terminal is not electrified.

There is a small possibility that I got north and south reversed; check out checkthedoorlight's excellent map - I'm sure that he has it down.

I know electric trains can run to/from HPA, the question is where does the electrified trackage go to west of there. The tracks around the LIC station are not powered, I know that for a fact.

To LIC.

The tracks around the LIC station are not powered, I know that for a fact.

The tracks on the south side are powered by third rail; see GP38 Chris's and my posts.

Anyone know for sure? I remain positive that the tracks near the LIC station have no third rail(s).

I posted a photo of an M7 IN the yard, (a recent photo from the net), how much more proof can there be? The one side of the yard is electrified, which I remember from the 90's when I used to go there often, and apparently still is judging by the photos I found and posted.

I haven't been there since last summer, but I can't imagine that LIRR took the initiative to tear out the third rail in that time.

But where in relation to the station? I don't recall any third rail anywhere near the station, except for where the HPA line diverges from the Montauk further east.
