Yes, carefully over the switch. Even in 60th Street tube, a stretch where even the most laden and lardsome R68As can fly, R16's barely broke a sweat.wayne |

Chris: When the 6th Avenue Line opened it only had the two local tracks. These two tracks expanded to four just north of West 4 Street and the four tracks continued thru to 2 Avenue. The diamond crossover north of West 4 Street were added in 1967 when the 6 Avenue express tracks were finally opened.Larry, RedbirdR33 |

You're absolutely right - it makes no sense. The 6th Ave. line has a TON of switches while 8th Ave. has none between 59th and Canal. |

I thought it was neat that Queens Boulevard had both an (E) and an (EE) and that the (E) went to Eighth Avenue via 53d Street while the (EE) went to Broadway via 60th Street. You could take either the (E) to 50th Street or the (EE) to 49th Street-Seventh Avenue in those days. |

I couldn't understand why they used the designation "EE" instead of "FF" since if you look at the map, most of the stations on Bway served by that service are actually closer to the F line than they are to the E line especially the one at 34/Herald Sq which is, in reality, the same location. |

That actually surprises me since with a little more careful planning, both the S/B and N/B 6 av local tracks could have been elevated a few feet and a diamond Xover installed between the 6 Av lcl tracks and the 8 Av exp tracks since there is sufficient room for it. |

For a short period of time during the construction of the line, the 34th Street station was a terminal, and thus needed to be equipped as such.In constrast the major portion of the Eighth Avenue subway line was built and opened as one unit. The use of 34/6 as a terminal was not for such a "short" period of time. It lasted from the opening of the 6 Av Line in 1940 until November of 1967 when Chrystie opened, a period of 27 years. I'm referring only to is use as a terminal for rush hour BBs and late PM, midnight and weekend Fs. It was also used as a terminal for all 6 Av services in late 1962 when blasting for the construction of the express tunnels compromised the existing subway infrastructure. It has also, of course, been used as a terminal during periods ahen the 6 Av side of the Manny B is closed. |

I rode on them exactly twice, 19 years apart. The first time was on 9/23/67, when they still ran on the Three Stooges Division and had their original BMT number route curtains (what's a 15?). They were still clean, wore their original olive drab and had vertical door pockets. Fast forward to October 1986. I took an R-16 Moe two stops along Nassau St. Slanted door pockets, graffiti everywhere and somehow that train didn't fall apart. Even the doors worked. |

Now that I know how the local tracks interconnect, I'm trying to piece together the rest of the track layout. AFAIK the 8th Ave. express tracks stay on top while the 6th Ave. express tracks ramp up slightly south of W. 4th St. to allow the n/b 8th Ave. local track to pass beneath. |

While it would appear that there are lots of switches, they're normally not used. Now, I have seen and ridden on n/b trains that have switched over north of 59th, but that's about it. The ones between 34th and 23rd are for access to the center layup track. They are not used for revenue moves. |
