The third rail height could be a problem in New York though.

3rd Rails taper at the ends. this effectively increases the tolerance.

As for the shoes, the trains might as well be Cinderella's ugly stepsisters. None of their feet could fit.

«One Seat Ride.»

What one seat ride?

I haven't got the figures but MNR's under running third rail seems to be positioned lower than the NYCTA/LIRR over running one. If so, the peanut butter sandwich theory won't work. (OTOH, why peanut butter? Why not Virginia ham or Pastrami with mayo and mustard? Crumpets, anyone?)

The New Haven had a three position shoe which would work on both NYC (Metro North) and PRR (LIRR) third rails. The middle, horizontal position was self-centering, and would ride on either third rail. The top position was used to fold up the shoes when running east of Woodlawn (for clearance purposes), and the bottom position was to pull the shoe away from the rail (to isolate) when running on the NYC. The shoe was repositioned by a pneumatic cylinder.
