Without the blue stripe on the side, I find it very hard to love the R44 or R46. Loss of the stripe is of course NOT a reason to retire them. But it did kill my affection...sort of like when a beautiful girl gets a terrible perm...

They had their good times and their bad ones. When I hired into motors, they were down to the last several trains of P-Wire so I did not get any trips on them so did not to compare them to their Westcode counterparts. I have never seen a train yet like the one I had at Far Rockaway where while walking with coffee for T/D Collins noticed the train I left a minute before creeping to the block on its own after already runing the trip. Shortly after that we were laying them up with cords pulled and 8 handbrakes.

There have been a handful of incidents at Far Rockaway where the NewTran Brake Valve allowed the T/O to place the train into the Handle Off position without stopping in "Emergency".(similar to "quick charging") The train is essentially left in charge but with the controller in handle off so the air is not being replenished. As the Straight Air bleeds off, the brakes release and the train rolls into the block - Only at Far Rockaway. Go figure.

far rockaway is graded to the block. I had heard at the time of my incident . Go figure indeed, that the R44 westcode controllers are interlocked to prevent a train from not going in emergency . there Is a way for R32s to charge by themselves using nothing more than a brake handle but I'll spill those beans you on the private channels

I remember when the 44's were charging themselves up & attempting to leave the stations. IIRC, it got to a point where an arriving motorman / motorperson could not dump the train until the departing one was on board ready to charge it up just in case.

On the R-44s, you could take the charge from one end and transfer it to the other. In doing so, you could change ends without the risk of recharging the brake system and finding no P-wire. That was the purpose for that practice.

Yup! Those would be the VV120s and the oilless VV120s we were testing. There was a VV120 on the high numbered A car of every R-44 Link. Very high output but the fans fall apart. They were considering using them as a 3rd compressor on the R-46s.
