[Video] New Elmont Station

Posted by Q23 on Sun Nov 21 06:28:33 2021

Went to the new Elmont Station which opened up yesterday for passenger use. Here's a brief overview of the station, along with some Main Line action, and footage of the first train to stop at the station, in revenue service.

Enjoy, and thanks for viewing!

They keep saying this is the first new LIRR station in 50 years. 50 years ago, which station was that ?

The last station to open before Elmont, as far as I can find, is Mastic-Shirley, which opened in 1960, unless you want to count Hillside Facility, which opened in 1991. Not sure about the “nearly 50 years” statement.

Elmont looks like it's a pretty long walk to the UBS arena. I wonder how long it'll be until the novelty wears off with fans, especially given that they'll walk past the Belmont Park station, right near the arena.

Cuomo's ego really was something, wasn't it?

Yep:

And while it's nice to have the new station (which will help), what is REALLY needed is to re-do the area around Belmont Park Station into a flying junction where trains from both directions can easily access it and the bridge leading into Belmont Park is upgraded to two tracks from a single track, allowing it to be allowed to be used for trains to/from UBS more easily.

Anyone who doesn't want to walk can take the free shuttle bus. The Belmont station has serious limitations that can not be easily overcome.

They moved some Ronkonkoma line stations in 1987, like Deer Park moved closer to the old Pine Aire, but I don't think they were thinking that.

I think their ulterior motive is to get rid of Belmont Park since they detest run event special trains. With Elmont, they are going to have to replicate Queens interlockng east of it to make the westbound platform fully functional. Quite a boondoggle, yet spitting distance from Queens Village and Bellrose.

Based upon the signage, there was only 1 train every hour (5:17, 6:17 and 7:17). The Belmont Race Track station would have trains come in-between those times? The westbound platform is in, but the overhead passageway is not complete. Why not just built a temporary entrance, or is there no way to cross under the tracks? The first westbound train blew its whistle (horn) when bypassing the station, the second train didn't. The diesel pulled train had the first car with an partially open door and it sounded like a flat wheel in the last car. Where would they be towing it to, as the Hillside facility is west of there. It appeared there was practically no one left on the train when it left the station.

I'm just wondering, on a temporary basis based on after the game eastbound Hempstead departure times and interlocking locations, if they could "wrong rail" a train or 2 into the eastbound platform at Elmont for westbound passengers following events rather than having to bus them all to Queens Village if the Belmont Station "specials" are not available?

Since LIRR built this staion to avoid use of event specials, likely not, or else they could simply run special trains to Belmont Park.

They ran specials to Belmont Park yesterday (only from Jamaica though, they apparently no longer go to Penn). They're also doing that today, based on info from the Train Time app. So both stations are still in use. Belmont Park's service is more limited though for events, compared to how it's been done in the past.

I don't know whether this was done for this station only or if it's a new thing for all future stations (or station sign replacements). However, I doubt they would all of a sudden change every single station sign strip into the same color that their respective branches are given.

Maybe now, but the Islanders while the primary tenant won't be the only ones using the arena. Concerts and other events should take up another 100+ days over the course of a calendar year, and that is before the rest of the development.

Those limitations can be fixed:

1. Build a flying junction that would allow trains in BOTH directions to access the bridge between the mail LIRR road and Belmont Park.

2. Double-track the bridge. As that area becomes more developed this will be needed, especially if Belmont Park itself eventually becomes a Racino.

Well, on MNRR, there are very few stops where more than 1 line stops- Maybe GCT, 125th, and now Fordham. Color strips can either be left off the signs at those stops, or in the case of Fordham, still colored blue, because the Harlem Line "owns" it, even though the New Haven stops there.

If LIRR started using color strips, there are quite a few stops for which a decision had to be made as to which line they actually belong.

My late grandparents moved out to Calverton in the '70's.

I would drive over the grade crossing where I saw this tiny grey shelter which didn't even have a concrete slab on the ground, just dirt. At least it had a Calverton sign.

Over time, even after they left for the nursing home, every so often I would go out of my way to cross the grade crossing, the last time on a tour bus about 4 years ago long after the station was closed when the bi-levels showed up. That tiny grey shelter was still there, obviously very weather beaten.

The 2 Wrestling Companies with roots in this area have upcoming events there.

WWE has Monday Night Raw one week from tonite; AEW has Wednesday Night Dynamite sometime next month IIRC.

No university-operated shuttle between SUNY Southampton and the LIRR, the school recommends that students looking for the LIRR use a taxi or ride share service. Suffolk Transit runs an on-demand service that serves the campus and Southampton LIRR station among other destinations upon request, but no mention of it on the university’s website.

really, this station is a pretty useless expenditure of money. don't get me wrong, i like any new train station. however this is really dopey. the closest residential area is what i suppose is the queens section of bellrose. i guess drivers on the cross island parkway could hypothetically use it. but that's a pretty damn compact congested area. not alot of room for major highway reconstruction hijinks. and nobody is gonna be building jersey-style apartment towers in that weird little corner of long island.

nope. service to the existing belmont station should have been improved.

the smart money should have bypassed belmont and went to what's coming up at ronkonkoma. i've read serious discussion of a direct connection to macarthur airport from the train station via a nice long elevated "slidewalk".
