That's when they were pretty organized about relegating them to just rush hour use.

I know the first Z train in the morning go back to Jamaica, and stays in J service all day. The rest go back to only ENY and go to sleep. That photo must be them.m

Assigned to the (D). That's when I was surprised when it pulled into Atlantic Ave station, seeing a two tone interior. Then, I rode it to Brighton Beach where I took those pictures. That pair was basically a new R-42 that was kept out in Colorado longer than needed.

Steve Zabel told me of the story behind this. He stated that UMTA called the TA and asked them if they want this pair back. Steve told me the car numbers #4764-65 was on the roster, but no one knew where they were. :-)

Not at that time. Judging from the rollsign, this picture was taken sometime between '86 and '88 during the Manny B closure. During that time the Washington Heights/Concourse B, D and K trains were exclusively R42s. During the summer there was no air conditioning at all on those cars.

I knew a lot of people who lived along the CC & D trains and during the summer they would avoid them like the plague.

Countdown clocks and WI-FI. "What the hell is a WI-FI?" one would probably say in the'80s.

Back then your "countdown clock" was when you hear a roar, the train was coming.

There were 2 weeks in July 1969 that I had an early AM run on the A. On the way to work, I always got an R-42 with fully functional A/C but since I was dressed for midday temperatures, the ride was too cold. During the entire 2 weeks I had that run, I only got an R-42 for one half trip. The rest of the time I had to put up with the mini fans of the R-10s.

When I took my photos in Brighton Beach, except for graffiti, those cars were new. It didn't look like years of wear and dirt from being used consantly.

Even the blue paint on the walls was shiny and clean. The floor tiles didn't have the appearance of years of wear.

When the R-42s first showed up they were assigned in groups to the various lines that received them and usually kept in solid trains especially on the A. Occasionally, a mixed train of 32s and 42s would show up on the D, and in Queens mixed trains of 38s, 40s (both straight and slant) and 42s on the E and F.

They were dangerous. They were the unofficial smoking cars, not always tobacco. However, they were fun to ride when used on the CPW express tracks. The strobe effect of the tunnel lighting as you sped along was psychedelic effect. I tended to avoid these cars unless it was rush hour, when they were full by default.
