AMTK thinks that it runs airplanes.
As long as I have to put up with that bullhonk, I may as well fly.

Indeed, by paying a few dollars extra Delta will bump you up to zone 1 boarding regardless of where your seat is.

It has nothing to do with terrorism. It has to do with dumbass passengers getting on the wrong train. In France or other European countries where conductors don't bother to take tickets it isn't as much of a problem, but in the US dealing with a mis-routed passenger costs valuable time and $.

Ah! That explains why they do it and why they don't close the loopholes— if you're intelligent enough to sneak through the mezzanine at Penn Station, you're obviously intelligent enough to board the right train.

A major reason Amtrak doesn't want people going down to the platform early is that you can have two trains opposite eachother on the platform or just one train (the wrong train) just sitting around until the right train shows up. They really don't want passengers ending up in Sunnyside.

I've done all those suggested evades, but the one at 30th St in Phily is the hardest. The "other" stairway is very close and within eye glance of the Amtrak lady letting the other's in. Also, there's often a burly looking Amtrak cop with a mean dog nearby. NYP is the best for getting around this problem.

We have the same problem in little ol' Albany. And there's hardly a chance of getting on the wrong train (and if there was, surely a digital sign would be cheaper than all the manpower and additional dwell time the single line adds to the process). No way to get around the line either.

How does it cost time and $? The conductor writes a quick note on an on board ticket thing (maybe throws a few hole punches on it), hands it to the passenger. Passenger boards next train going back to the station. Sometimes that next train is tomorrow, sucks to be him, not Amtrak's problem.

For the conductor on board, maybe 1 minute of additional time. Handicapped passengers take up more time than that. Heck, a passenger with a complaint takes up more time than that.

nice thing about Emeryville and several other CA stations--zero barriers. You can comfortably walk right to the platform without ever entering the stations. Never even had my ticket scanned on a recent Starlight trip. 'course since I paid extra to nap going south and thus ate in the diner, the records exist. Qty Total Price Remove

No problem. I've always wanted to take a long-distance train but haven't had the opportunity yet. If I ever do, I'll just buy an NJ Transit ticket to Penn Station Newark, Trenton, or some other convenient station along the Northeast Corridor where they don't have queues and wait for the Amtrak train there. Presumably my Amtrak ticket will be cheaper besides. That will teach them.

Sounds like AMTRAK does this to keep the pols (who often have to deal with paranoid constituents who think terrorists) happy. Might also have to do with concerns of liability if a terrorist did happen to get on board at one of the big stations and something did happen aboard a train like what happened in Europe in the past.

I tried going from the LIRR concourse on Sunday and found a barred door blocking my way that I didn't try to open. I totally understand why they funnel the crowd the way they do at Penn Station. Imagine trying to navigate the platform as you get off a train if a crowd of people was already there waiting to get on.
