Amtrak @ GCT yesterday |
|
Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Tue Oct 26 07:25:51 2010 With the fixes to the Spuyten-Duyvil drawbridge done, more drama hit Amtrak service on the Empire Line thanks to the derailment of a NJT train in Penn Station yesterday (#6621 if I remember the number correctly). As a result, to my knowledge (and thanks to very last second info, my chances to get photos blew up in my face!!! >:-P), only 1 Amtrak train did end up arriving at Grand Central Terminal. At 1345 (1:45 PM), Amtrak #280 arrived on Track 42 in GCT, engine #707 on the point with 5 Amfleet Is. It was taken around the loop after unloading its passengers, and at the same time, a huge busload of passengers from Penn Station was brought in to GCT to catch this train up to Albany and points beyond. Now, the drama grows, and the Amtrak people become awfully pissed, as GCT supervision basically kicked the Amtrak equipment out of the terminal after it completed its trip around the loop on the Upper Level. There were issues, as I have heard, with the #707's radio having trouble communicating on Channel 2 (78/78), and for the reason which sadly was unknown (radio communication sucked!!!), te Amtrak equipment, rather than be backed back in to Track 42, was ordered to continue on northward up the line and to the Hudson Line and on its way, leaving several hundred Amtrak passengers pissed off and pretty pissed off!! Especially when they were all loaded onto Train #737 to Croton Harmon (yep, all regular stops were to be made!!!!), and some even got on Train #835 to Poughkeepsie. And how ripped off I was to await it being backed in to Track 42 and me to get my shots, only to hear the equipment was kicked out and sent northward on its way!!! Sorry I couldn't get the photos out!! But it made for another story to tell, especially yours truly would end up assisting the Amtrak passengers in their queries (and yes, I did try to get myself on a train they were considering using as a shuttle to get Amtrak passengers up to Croton Harmon, but they didn't gimme the extra $$$$-make chance!! Can't say I didn't try!!) :-) But more so ripped off at a missed photo op for you good folks!!! Grrr!! >:-( So, yep, #707 with 5 cars @ 1345, Track 42 yesterday. |

So I guess that means that Amtrak Empire Connection crews still have to be qualified to Grand Central in case of circumstances like yesterday's? |

Nope, just #707 and 5 cars, and I only saw the tail end of the Amfleet car (last car) entering the loop. No MNR locos at all, and surprisingly they didn't double end it like times past. |

Could they have gotten the boot because they couldn't switch to 3rd rail power and had to run the diesel the entire time in GCT? Maybe some tree hugger dropped a dime, or management maybe took this one train seriously?Paul, how much is the rule enforced about no diesels in Park Ave tunnel, or GCT? |

The no-running-in-diesel-mode in the tunnel is strictly enforced, and can be BIG trouble for the engineer!!They might have got the boot because if the train should fail for any reason, and the peak period was just 2 hours away and they could not move it for any reason, especially off the loop, that means BIG trouble for the ability to get equipment moved around and into place for the evening rush traffic. The loop gets plenty of use during the 2 PM - 6 PM period. |

I noted a large percentage of Amtrak trains on the Hudson line yesterday with an engine on both ends of the train. Perhaps this was to facilitate quick egress from GCT. Two of the trains had P40's, not P32-DM's, though. And some trains were still terminating in either C-H or Yonkers. |

Awesome!! Those pax certainly got a treat after their long ride from Niagara Falls. Instead of that dark and dreary half-tunnel by Riverside drive, they got to enter the city in style on Park Avenue! All the naysayers about it never being able to happen can finally be silenced. Though I'm surprised they did it for this and not the barge incident? What made this special? |

Emergency, apparently. Maybe the train was too close to the Inwood Movable Bridge to wait for another locomotive to come and haul the whole train back to Croton-Harmon. So maybe they just decided to let it come to GCT. Otherwise it would have been blocking a track for MNCR trains to use. |

MNRR people have an attitude problem when it comes to AMTK. Once or twice I had a problem with the AMTK tic machine at Crtn-Hrmn and when I asked the MNRR agent what I should do , I got a nasty "I DON'T KNOW NUTTIN ABOUT THOSE MACHINES!" No suprise the MNRR suits at 340 Madison ave did that to 707 and her 5 cars. |

False, MNR threw those cars out of GCT as it was a safety hazard having them there to begin with and Quite Frankly MNR was being nice allowing it in to begin with. The MNR ticket agents at CH are not trained on AMTRAK machines now they should have been polite so that is a legit beef, but I've also encountered similar nastiness from employees everywhere. |
