Anniversary now an insincere publicity circus

By Ellis Henican

I’ve begun to dread these 9/11 anniversaries. Do they really
have to come every year? It isn’t just the innocence thatwas lost that day. That will never be recaptured. It isn’t even the
lives that were lost. We have far better ways of honoring those.

But nine years after the planeshit the towers, these anniversary
commemorations have been robbed of all their authenticity. And just wait till next year!

Schmaltzy TV specials. Cheap emotional pageantry. Political
pandering of the crassest sort. This is no way to remember something so tragic. This year, the 9/11 conversation has been dominated by
two nasty little stories, classic lowest-common-denominator affairs.

The uproar over a mosquetwo blocks from Ground Zero. nd the hype surrounding a Fla. pastor’s threato burn Qurans making an angry standagaist religions diversity. ]Thrusting some fringe clergyman’s
press release to the top of the news. This is what the season
has sunk to?

The debate over the proposed Cordoba Initiative’s Park51 Islamic
cultural center on Park Place was New York’s contribution to the anniversary thickheadedness, although it really wasn’t
fueled by New Yorkers’ ire. Most people here understand
that all faiths are welcome in the city and live side by side. We also know that the commercial blocks
of lower Manhattan are many things, but sacred ground isn’t one of
them. The New York Dolls strip club is closer to the former
World Trade Center than this mosque will be. It was out-of-towners and suburban politicians who found an audience for these attacks. .

But leave it to Terry Jones to sink even lower than chasing
houses of worship away. The Florida pastor, whose church has
maybe 50 members, had vowed to commemorate the terror attacks
with a bonfire of Qurans.
That lit up the phones on talk
radio and roared right to cable
TV. Gen. David Petraeus said we
were handing our enemies a propaganda
victory. Even the president
was drawn in. (Jones said
Thursday he wouldn’t rule out the
Quran burning after claiming the
imam lied to him about moving
the mosque.)
Next year, let’s note 9/11 quietly,
each in our own personal
way. Let’s ignore the pandering
politicians and the publicityseeking
men of God.
Something important happened
on Sept. 11, something
more important than all this
silliness.

Leave it Americans to turn a solemn event into crass, maudlin, political spectacle.

Next year is the 10th anniversary and certainly there should be memorial services but that should be it for a while. It really starts to lose meaning if we go through it every year.

Look, I don't mean to minimize the meaning of the day but after a while it really does get repetitive. How long did they memorizlize Pearl Harbor Day?

I think the fact that we have TV today and didn't in 1941 has something to do with it

The Florida nut case should be sent to Gitmo for aiding and abeting terroriest propergander. He is commiting a crime, giving the enemy just the type of story they use to recrute more terroriests. Where is the FBI when we need them, get thee to Fla.

On topic: Into the 1960s, that is, a half century after the Great War ended and two more wars were past, all the trains on the NYCTA stopped for a minute at 11:11 a.m. on each November 11.

Now no remembrance is important, not even one that happened just nine years ago, in our own city.

Re: 9/11 Anniversary and rebuilding (trying to get this on-topic)

If this year was any indication:

For me, it was watching some rememberances early in the morning, but after that is was football, football and more football the rest of the day.

Yes, there needs to be rememberances every year (mainly because of how sick those day's events were), and especially next year being the 10th anniversary, even more so with the fact the new 1 WTC (Freedom Tower) will be much closer to being finished along with 4 WTC plus hopefully some of the Fulton Transportation Center (trying to at least have this somewhat on topic).

The one thing that to me should have been done, but no one thought of it was to rebuild the original "not quite twin" Hudson Terminal Towers (that originally opened in 1908, one of which I believe was torn down in the late '60s and the other after the WTC station was finished in 1971 and except for the Singer Tower I believe were (prior to 9/11) the tallest buildings ever to be demolished in New York) that pre-dated the old WTC on Church Street in their old locations, with perhaps the PATH tracks returned to the original spot underneath those buildings as well as part of the new WTC.

Let's not blame it on "Americans." This was a solemn occasion until this year when some decided it was time to make political or cultural points.
