All Lettered Tiles At B'way-Nassau (IND) Replaced. |
|
|
Posted by William A. Padron on Thu Sep 2 08:05:38 2010 So, now all the iconic letter tiles on the trackside walls at the Broadway-Nassau Street station (IND "A"/"C" lines) have been replaced, in anticipation that it will be officially renamed as part of the Fulton Street Transit Center. However, the Brooklyn (Downtown)-bound side wall all each say "FULTON ST", while the Manhattan (Uptown)-bound side wall all each say just as "FULTON".And so it goes... -William A. Heh....well, I predicted/suggested this change MANY years ago!See here - 2004....where did the years go?: http://talk.nycsubway.org/perl/read?subtalk=726634 I also expect that "Broadway-Nassau" will be changed to "Fulton St" when the new 9/11 funded Fulton Complex is built. There two, they simply have to change the metal signs on the platform. The wall has "IND" repeating monograms on the wall saying "Bway aNassau" (or something like that), but as we have seen in recent renovations all over the IND, they have no problem covering IND tiles. |

Although I agree that the IND style tiles at Fulton, Broad and 14/8 should have been restored to their original condition, the ones on the Nassau St Line are from the original BRT/BMT designs that were to have been used had the connection from Chambers to the Montague tunnel had been built earlier as planned so are really what should have been done in the first place. 14/8 is a different story since I don't believe the BMT originally intended to go west of 6 Ave anyhow. |

It was only after when construction started in 1925 for the IND's 8th Avenue main trunk line that a station for the BMT at 14th Street-8th Avenue underneath was added afterward in the plans. -William A. The stations at Fulton Broad, and 8th Ave are more in fitting with the lines they are on NOW than when they were originally built, so I have no problem with those wonderful and beautifully done renovations. That said, I don't like the renovations at IND stations where they used different fonts on the IND monograms when redoing them, such as at Delancey, and a whole list of others. I like the original IND font. |

Well, there is still this one BMT station that has those IND/BOT-style name tiles, and it was just underneath only one mosaic tablet there when a connecting transfer ramp was opened in 1937 for the "GG": Lorimer Street on the Canarsie-bound platform along the "L" line. The station was renovated some years ago, but the tiles were still retained. Yep, I remember that tilework vivdly. Lorimer St. was a stomping ground of mine for three years from 1967 to 1970. I used that station every Saturday during the school year each year. BMT standards, R-7/9s, R-42s - lots of memories. |

Perhaps they either ran out of "S" and "T" tiles or realized that it didn't look good on the other side. Also, on another note of station renovation, yesterday I saw the entrances at Jay St near the Fulton Mall, and they now read, "Jay St-Metrotech", the new name of that complex. Borough Hall will finally be removed, likewise for Lawrence St. |

Removing "Borough Hall" is another anti-Brooklyn action--like changing "Fourth Avenue local" to "Broadway local" or restricting the "212" area code to Manhattan instead of going by population and giving Manhattan a new area code. They still keep dumping on the"outer boroughs." I dont agree with that, the 212 was given to Manhattan as that is where the most 212 numbers were. And "Borough Hall" is closer to the IRT stations that bare it's name. The only reason Jay St got that name to begin with was because the IND wanted a borough hall station, and that was the closest one to it when they were building the IND. The BRT and IRT were still private companies at the time, and the city wanted a Boro Hall station. it has nothing to do with anyone favoring "Manhattan" over Brooklyn...and in any event, when the IND was built and the Jay St-Boro Hall station named, Brooklyn was long a part of NYC already anyway anyway, and is irrelevant to Brooklyn's "independence" even back then....it wasn't "City Hall" anymore after all...This all said, I will miss the name "Jay St-Boro Hall"....that was my station for 3 years.....and old habits die hard. I will continue to call it "Jay St Boro Hall", just as I still call 71 Ave-Forest Hills, "Continental Ave" and Broadway-East New York..... |

I still call Elderts lane that. I also refuse to call Forest Parkway, 85th St, although in that case, the Forest parkway mezzanine has been completely removed at this point.104th St I accepted easily, as like Forest Parkway, the entire 102 mezzanine is gone. That was an interesting change. It started as 102 St, went to 102-104 St, then to 104-102 St, and now is straight out 104 St. It's funny how they pick and choose though when doing this. For example Junius St's mezzanine is unused, and partially removed, the access to that station is at Powell Ave, yet they never hyphenated that name or attempted to change it like 102 St |

What they should have done when they split 212 originally was give each boro their own code. Now NYC has five codes, one overlaps the entire city, one overlaps Manhattan, and the other overlaps the outer boros. |
