Scans of Old Stuff - 1 of 2 |
|
|
Posted by X-Astorian on Wed Sep 1 18:00:00 2010 Another follow-up to the old schedules thread of several months ago. In the mid-50s the TA contracted with the private Official Timetable Corp. to print late arrival station schedules (I’m not sure if it was for all or selected stations). Like their 1970s counterparts, these were paid for through advertising – some local, some citywide. I find a lot of it more interesting than the schedule itself but that's me.If you’re interested in this kind of “subwayana” you may want examine the two below closely. The one for Bedford Avenue on the Canarsie Line refers to “Exp. Or Lcl Trains” even though that service was provided only during rush hours (14th St.-Fulton trains going express between Lorimer and Myrtle). In addition the owl headway was 30 minutes not the more common 20. The 168th Street schedule for the A/AA seems to only show the A as owl headways are 20 minutes. I guess it’s possible, but unlikely, that both the A and AA arrived and departed at the same times. A couple more to come. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I'm happy to share these oldies but goodies and am glad that you like them too.It seems it was easier to remember phone numbers when exchanges had names - PEnnsylvania 6-5000, BUtterfield 8 of Elizabeth Taylor fame and the AStoria, RAvenswood and YEllowstone exchanges of my old neck of the woods. |

I didn't even know that there WERE timetables available to the public in those days. IIRC, on the Brooklyn IRT in those days, nobody ever thought about a schedule, as there would always be another train within a few minutes. My mother even knew the Low-V color codes for New Lots and Flatbush.Bob |

Beginning in 1962, IIRC, old listing were retained with the two letters only, but any new or changed listings had all numbers. After 1978, all remaining letter listings were converted to all numbers. For a few years before 1962, there were arbitrary two-letter codes assigned. I recall, for instance, RN-3 (Mill Basin and Canarsie), XX-4 (north Bronx), HT-7 (somewhere in Manhattan).Bob |

OK I have to ask: What would you do at a chinchilla ranch, and why do you need to make an appointment? Was this anything like the "chicken ranch" of "Best Little Whorehouse" fame? Inquiring minds want to know! |
