R-179's ordered with video cameras |
|
|
Posted by rbseabeach on Wed Sep 1 15:17:11 2010 According to Tuesday's NY Post, the R-179's have been ordered with video csmeras. This is not only a great idea, it is an absolute necessity. The thought that someone maybe watching will discourage all types of serious crime and quality of life offenses. |

First the cameras are hidden, concealed from view or tampering.THAT secret will last all of 10 seconds, BUT one camera will be set up to protect the other. IF you block this one, the other one saw you do it. Yeah, with team work you can block both cameras at once BUT they will know WHO was on the train and will follow up on those pics. LION suspects that two of the "hidden cameras" will be fairly obvious, but that there will be two more which "are very well concealed." Perhaps even a pair of obvious dummies, which will take care of the dummies. You do not need to see the crime being committed. You only have to see who is on the train at that time.

You over estimate the value of security cameras to do anything except provide amusing clips for the evening news and possibly aid in investigations for serious crimes. Nobody is going to be calling out CSI: New York to track down random scratchitti vandals. |

The Scratchitti Squad will add mugs to their book, Then if they inadvertently do catch one of them, they can nail him for all of the crimes that he committed. But you are right, it goes into a loop and lasts about 24 hours before being overwritten. If something BIG happens, the can pull the chips and examine them in their office. So yeah, no scratchittistas need worry.

Good point, and that response would apply to all camera equipment in all locations. I woudl hope that by the time the trains are delivered, the cameras will be in a location where that is not possible. |

If for exmple youth are hanging out and causing trouble on a particular street corner, and then the owner of a building installs video cameras and posts signage that they are being watched, they youths will no longer find that corner appealing to hang out and they will move to another location. With cameras in the subway cars, it will make people think twice before doing something because they will never know if they will be caught red handed at the next stop before the doors open. |

Yes! and after awhile the message will get out that someone is always watching. LEts use a group of youths coming home from a night of partying. THey are now hanging out in the last car and they are swinging from the bars, littering up the car, breaking bottles, playing music, applying graffiti etc. This activity should not even be considered if they suspect that at the next station the NYPD will be waiting. |

I agree it is a deterrence, but as pointed out by others, the cars will come equipped for not with cameras. LION made a good point though, that the tapes are not generally watched unless something major (stabbing, shooting, etc) so chances are they will not do the effort for vandalism and most likely the tapes will be recorded over before they find the vandalism. |

I do not think the main reason the MTA is moving foward with the program has to do with vandalism. It is for all illegal activity in the subway. Maybe less people will walk between cars, maybe there will be less panhandlers, maybe people will think twice about taking up two or three seats, Remember cameras were installed in Buses starting I believe with the B-46 after a driver was killed. |

Yes, but no one has said yet whether the cameras will be watched live or whether they will be taped only and viewed only if a crime is reported before the tapes are re-used :( |

But they are NOT tapes. They are chips, probably just little SD Chips. A 16GB chip with servalence quality resolution will probably hold 24 - 48 hours before being overwritten.![]() * You = youse guys and not Arnine of the post that this reply is directly attached to. ☺ |

Denver's LRVs have cloth upholstered seats and I have yet to see any damage from vandalism. OTOH it's quite possible that any damaged upholstery gets replaced promptly. No graffiti, either, although the SD-100s have semi-wraparound ads - only the car ends don't have them. |

You are right either way as I do always call them tapes, which I do out of habit as I am used to calling them that. But you are right they would be chips which I am not used to calling them. :) I better get used to it tho. |
