Posted by Newkirk Images on Tue Aug 31 11:07:16 2010 LINK to NY Post article.340 surveillance-ready cars on order By TOM NAMAKO Transit Reporter Last Updated: 10:39 AM, August 31, 2010 Posted: 3:46 AM, August 31, 2010 The MTA is on track to create a subway ring of steel. In an unprecedented security move, transit officials are ordering up 340 new subway cars that will come equipped for surveillance cameras, The Post has learned. Instead of tearing up old subway cars and installing the wiring and hardware needed for security cameras -- a costly process -- the new cars will already have the technology built in, NYC Transit officials said. The MTA will just have to pop in the cameras, and the cars will be ready to roll with their new surveillance equipment. Future cars will be camera-ready," said MTA spokesman Paul Fleuranges. "The hardest part of retrofitting old cars to run the lines is that it involved taking the car apart." In February, The Post reported that the MTA had installed the cameras in four of an E train's 10 cars as part of a pilot program. In about six months, the MTA will make a final call about whether all future subway cars will become "see trains." But the move to order the camera-ready cars shows transit officials are taking the idea seriously. "It will be part of the infrastructure, in case we want to go that route," Fleuranges said. The new cars, known as R-179s, would replace aging cars currently used on the A line. An advertisement for manufacturing the cars went out to potential contractors June 3. MTA documents peg the cost of the initial 290-car order, likely to be followed by a 50-car second order, at about $748 million. It's expected that the 60-foot cars -- which will be joined together to make about 34 trains in total -- will be on the tracks by 2015. Any subway that is equipped with the well-hidden cameras will feature a sign that reads: "Notice: This train may be equipped with a video recording device." The feeds aren't monitored live, but the videos can be passed on to law-enforcement authorities in case a crime is committed or for anti-terror purposes. The NYPD has yet to ask for any feeds from the pilot cameras. The added surveillance also should make straphangers taking late-night rides more at ease. tom.namako@nypost.com |

I guess this spells the end of 75 footers if the article is right but it is the PostFactor in the last R-32's and 42's to go first, then possibly R-44's next. The R-68's are also 75 footers, and too young to bite the steel dust. Bill Newkirk |

No, as discussed here Bill the R44s are next to go as they technically were already removed from service and only recently returned to service. The order would be R44s, R32s and R42s.But, yes I forgot about the R68s but most likely after the R179s and having the rest of the fleet being 60' the R68 replacements would defer back to 60' |

The order would be R44s, R32s and R42s.I meant the R-32's and 42's would next to be retired when the R-179's come in. The R-44's by that time would be reefed, scrapped or sold to Fidel Castro.: ) Bill Newkirk |

No. I made the claim based on the R143/R160/R179s being 60'. Also, based on discussions here about NYCT trying to get away from 75' those two items are what made me make the claim. I did not say it as a fact, which was what I meant by the 'most likely'. I apologize I should have been clearer. |

No. I made the claim based on the R143/R160/R179s being 60'. But the R-143/160 replaced 60 foot cars. So why would they be part of this discussion about if 60 foot cars would replace existing 75 foot cars? Also, based on discussions here about NYCT trying to get away from 75' Those discussions were just railfans talking. No one claimed to actually be reporting what NYCT was actually thinking at the time. I did not say it as a fact Nor did I say that you said it was a fact. It was very clearly just your opinion. Hence why I asked why it was you felt so strongly as to label your opinion as "most likely". Personally I wouldn't say "most likely 60 feet". If the decision was being made today, I think it would be slightly more likely that the R-68/A replacements would be 60'. But since it's not being made today, there are so many variables involved and it's SO far in the future that I don't think anyone, even at NYCT, could made any kind of a prediction that they felt so confident about that they could call it "most likely". Just my opinion. |

Yes the R46s, but my guess is they'll be replaced by the R179s along with the R44s/32s/42s if I am wrong my guess is future car classes will be 60' based on the R143s/160s/179s and based on discussions here that mentioned how NYCT is trying to get away from the 75' cars |

Yes I meant that there will be no new 75' cars ordered, but I see now I wasn't quite right on my predictions on the future :)It seems that TA is going for a universal design for the 'B' division based on the R-143/160 cars. Cars of one length, using same or similar parts, no real deviation as in past car designs. So they can transfer equipment anywhere making adjustments in lengths of 4 or 5 cars per set. Yes, the NYC subway of the future will be boring and NO RFW's ! : ( Bill Newkirk |

I understand, and don't mind it so much if they weren't so damn bland. :( I really am tempted to buy a paint roller, a few buckets of blue paint and stand at the edge of the platform at my stop and well add my own color, but I won't as I do not wanna go to jail. |

There really is not much for me to like about the current system or less so where it is headed. My interest is only historical nowGovernment agencies run everything and have obliterated historical signs and references, the equipment is not only boring but extremely uncomfortable, no railfan window to make things interesting, and uniform advertising that makes the ride even more boring.. I see the subway today the way many people do - a cattle car that gets you from point A to point B and is my transportation choice of last resort. |
