Verizoff has some security issues with their routers. Been going on for several days now. And found out at 4AM this morning that their SSL certificates expired on the 28th which means that their own computers aren't talking to one another, or at least the ones using THIS certificate. Security certificates run for exactly ONE year, not a couple of months after. Apparently they misinstalled their cert, and in turn this is screwing up their DNS. Heh.

FWIW, just joined the circus about a half hour ago. Looks like they might have listened, I was on the phone until 7AM with their engineers overnight saying, "LOOK!" and they kept insisting that I should hook up a Winders box to MY router and the trouble was on MY end.

Showing them their expired certs took a while, but I finally got ahold of somebody willing to look. Lessee if they actually fixed it ...

Getting them to admit that they screwed up is the final piece falling into place before "armygeddon" ... don't do that again, k? :)

I'm still SMH over how stupid they were all night last night. Their upstate DNS died last night and all no matter what I tried to connect to, all I got was their "you didn't pay your bill" (noaccess.verizon.net) because their login server also had a bad certificate. The entire REGION was out, and trying to get them to notice no traffic on an OC48 backbone took over two hours. :(

Their peering with Level3, AT&T and comcast is still boned as well, forcing "route-arounds" through inferior networks for the same reason. Seems some backbones won't talk to you with an invalid certificate either.

I thought they were through Level3 ... as far as edge routers doing the Bronx handshake, that's only occurring at boundaries. This place is on Verizoff, therefor others will have problems. It was even worse from Verizoff to Verizoff but it appears as though they've got that one fixed now.

And as to the idiots at Verizoff, there's even MORE stupid afoot (directly related to their cert problems as well) ... turns out that their old pieces of crap in the racks as well as the Actiontec's, Westells and D-Links they've provided for subscribers are all vulnerable to a 13 year old hack (now being exploited wildly) called "DNS Binding" ... Verizoff's been under heavy attack the past few weeks as a result and they're too #@%*#@ cheap to replace their old crap ...

Interesting times as the security industry fails again ... were it not for my own DNS caching server here, about the only intarwebs I'd have would be between my own machines. :)

I have Verizon for my home phone and hardly ever any issues, but I had no issue w/ them when I had my cell w/them and I miss their wireless service, but love the iphone so stuck w/AT&T :(

AT&T is the tits up here with the iWant ... and as to Verizoff, they suck no matter what you do with them. Their CDMA cell service was awful, everything sounded like RealPlayer on dialup and coverage was awful on cell - the landline is on really bad copper full of serious line noise and hum - phone rarely rings when someone else calls and dialtone is elusive. And then there's their DSL which isoften slower than dialup if it's there at all. No, if I could lose these twods entirely, it'd be happy days. But cable won't come up here and satellite is way too expensive for the electricity to run the uplink side. But oh ... for two minutes alone in a dark alley with Seidenberg ... just two minutes, and no witnesses. :)

AT&T kinda screwed up with allowing the iPhone to use SO much data and not planning failities to match the need. At least AT&T is spending money and actually has an interest in trying to build. Verizoff on the other hand is *SO* phucked up, they've tried several times now to sell off their copper plant and NOBODY wants it, not even for ONE DOLLAR. (That was their offer a few months ago to Frontier) ... that's how badly they've not maintained their facilities since the BellAtlantic days. VZ will *not* invest, they've even dumped any further FiOS expansion. That's just how stupid they are. :(

That is stupid because FIOS from what folks in Westchester have said is pretty good. I was looking forward to it as I hate Time Warner. I can't even get a dish or another cable provider as my building's Co-Op Association won't allow dishes to be installed and refuse to allow other cable companies like RCN from wiring the building so TW has no incentive to try and fix their lousy service. I have their Wideband Internet Service which is awesome, but their HD sucks. It freezes, loses sound and when I bitch about it their solution? Pull the plug and wait 30secs and plug back in which works but only for an hour :(

There's FiOS over in the next town (Bethlehem, NY) and it's pretty decent. But they've stopped building there too. And this is TimeWeenie country here. Used to be Cablevision (of LI)but they sold to TW and got out of this area. We were with them for years and they were beyond wonderful. Within two weeks of TimeWeenie taking over, it turned to total crap and so we went with a dish as soon as USSB (DTV's predecessor) lit up their birds. But there is NOTHING that sucks worse than Verizoff. Nothing. Even TimeWeenie would be an improvement but they won't serve the dirty bird up here because we're too far from their nearest amplifier.

Yes, the neighborhood stuff is almost as good as the el photos.
Another very interesting segment was the Allen St segment, before they tore all the buildings on one side down to widen Allen St. There's some great before and after stuff there....
For example, I did some current views from Google street view, and it's so interesting. Notice how they tore half this building down to widen Allen St...and over the years, they poked windows into the sides, and the building still stands! In the old photo, the walls of the rooms that were once on the space still showed as scars of the widening:

Another great before and after is this scene at Division and Allen. I bet most people don't realize the cut out in that building on the corner was because an el used to wrap around it!!!

Seidenberg has declared it dead. No more builds anywhere, and he's made that an apparent absolute. If FiOS is connected to your building, then you can sign up. Any NEW construction will not happen.

And yeah, I've seen (ahem) "HD" on cable ... reminds me of 6 hour mode VHS compared to DirecTV ... 16:9 aspect garbage doesn't mean HD.

Can you imagine destroying so many buildings and uprooting so many people just to widen a street? Check out what was done to 6th Ave. The el turned east on 3rd St and then south on West Broadway because that's where 6th Avenue used to end. When they decided to build the IND, the simply carved an extension right through existing structures, all the way to Canal St. Houston St was widened when they built the IND, leading to even more destruction.

How about this pic showing the 9th Ave el station at Cortland St on Greenwich. This intersection no longer exists, it's basically in the middle of the WTC site, directly above the destroyed IRT subway station.

Unfortunately, not possible. The 104th United States Congress created the Telecommunications Act of 1996 which gives the cable industry carte blanche (along with Verizoff and others) to do what they're doing because "competition" is the only solution. Now what MIGHT be practical would be suing the co-op for "restraint of trade." That's what the Communications Act leaves as the ONLY remedy.

I was hoping ONE of the cables would finally have the balls to pull the plug on Disney and stop the thuggery. Ah well ... so the subs will bitch either way and thanks to ESPN, the cables can squeeze out another $4-5 in their own pockets from everybody using Disney as the excuse. Win-win.

Maybe I will do that. B/C it is unfair that we r suffering like this. My dad's only enjoyment right now since he got sick and after spending 3 months in hospital & rehab ctr is TV and it is very tempermental. :(

I agree. I do agree w/TW's campaign about getting tough, I really do. But for many to lose ABC & ESPN is just way too much TBH.

TBH I do not really watch those channels but my dad right now is mostly home-bound since he came home from the rehab ctr & a hospital before that and his only enjoyment is the TV. He loves Dancing w/ the Stars and it really would make him miserable to loss the ability to watch it. Otherwise, I would argue for TW letting them pull the plug, but the outcry will be too strong so cannot see TW letting them pull the plug.

I wouldn't be so upset cause I'd just switch to another service, but alas TW is it :(

And cable doesn't care. They ran out of bandwidth a long time ago and the only thing they can do to add more channels is kill the analogs and compress the crap out of the digitals. No other way for them to win other than bringing fiber to the set. And they won't.

TRUST me on this ... TW's campaign is an "industry standard." Programmer wants big hike, they were ready to cave before Disney asked for it. All this posturing is simply to ensure that YOU think they actually fought it. They already caved. Watch ESPN *not* disappear ...

Yup. It is sad. If it wasn't for the fact that neither DirectTV or the Dish Network will touch my building I'd get a dish and tell the Co-Opr's to go blank themselves. It was discovered a few years ago the Co-Opr's got kick-backs from TW for keeping it just them in the building.

I realize that. This happened last year I think w/NBC it is always the same sh*t over and over. If only I had $$ and resources I'd start my own system and be fair. My flaw is I am too idealistic at times :(

Eh? Half my town looks like a pincushion with the little red, yellow, and blue markout flags for the FiOS installations. Hell, their idiot contractor cut my power when digging the FiOS main line across our front yard. And they advertise FiOS as coming to the rest of South Jersey in the coming years. Are you sure they didn't just say FiOS wasn't coming to your particular burg while they focus on slightly larger or more accessible markets?

As for their wireless network, I've been using it for 10 years now and have no complaints. Other than the slightly high price, which I'll gladly pay for a phone that works when I need it, the service is top notch. I had to carry a Sprint phone for work one summer and it was a miserable piece of crap, dropping calls in the middle of the Philly suburbs. So far I haven't had to bother with the AT&T network, but the misfortunes of friends with iPhones are more than sufficient to convince me the Droid was the right way to go.
