LIRR Double Deckers |
|
|
Posted by Larry,RedbirdR33 on Tue Aug 31 11:00:02 2010 I recently saw a reference to the LIRR Bi-Levels as "C3." Is this an official designation and if so were there ever C1's or C2's? I know that several years ago the LIRR did have at least one trainset of double deck cars. What ever happened to it? Thank you all inadvance for any information.Larry, RedbirdR33 |

The C1's were the original prototypes which ran with the FL9AC's. They were electrically incompatible with the later C3's (LIRR brilliance once again) and the last I heard they were part of a museum fleet in CT. Not sure if there was a C2. |

There was no C2 as MTA only gives odd series designation to New Haven line stuff. The C1's were stored at end of line on Naugy (railway museum of New England) for its owner, the cars were for sale for years and finaly two or four of cars were sold to whomever took over colorado skitrain, but that train never got of ground. as far as I know the remaining 6 are still at end of line on Naugy. The C1's were not compatible with the DE/DM fleet or current C3's the cars were made up as married pairs with a drawbar between each A and B car. |

Most of the C-1's have gone to one of Ed Eliss's tourist railroads in Colorado. He was to in fact use them as part of the stillborn Denver Ski Train last winter. He converted the couplers and brakes to standard AAR , not a big deal. |

I think one of the problems they must have had with selling them is not only their non standard parts, but also the fact that you need a high platform to enter them. Most tourist railroads have low platforms or no platforms, so need the stairs. |

I know the LIRR considered converting them to be parlor cars to run with the C-3's, but with the computerized braking on the C-3's and the 16 vs. 32 volts, no way. |

I know someone asked then Pres Prendergast about converting some P-72's to bike cars to the east end. Response was the braking systems were too incompatible.LIRR also considered leasing a set of ex-Metroliner Amfleet cars as a Parlor car train when they were mothballed after the Acelas came on line. They were tested with a Super Steel, and they did not behave well together. |

The P72's were not compatible cause they ran at lower brake pressure and had no 480 trainline or communications jumpers. The C1's did have all required cabeling despite having wrong plugs(non standard)but could have been rewired other than doors. The Amfleets were rejected due to door and communications issues involving FRA required items, not brakes |
