R44/46 on the (C)?

I use the (A)/(C) from Broadway-Nassau only occasionally. It's been a couple of months since someone on this board announced that either R44 or R46 cars were running on the (C), but so far all I've seen is R32's. Were the newer cars already pulled from line, and if so, why?

A limited number of R-44s have been temporarilly assigned to the C line. The majority of trains remains comprised of R-32 type cars. The R-44s use on the C line will be ending shortly.

I was on an R44 C train yesterday (Sun Aug 29). It was a NB train that was using the F between Jay and W 4. The electronic side sign reflected that reroute, but had a typo - said "VIA DELANLEY" instead of "VIA DELANCEY". Otherwise it was correct.

I was lucky enough to ride 2 R44 consists on the C yesterday. One was 5454 as the lead car from Franklin Av to Broadway Junction. The other was 5389(?) as the last car from Shepherd Av to Broadway-Lafayette. It was weird riding something other than a SMEE on the C, but definitely a nice ride.

All the R44s are in A-B-B-A sets where the A cars have even numbers and the B cars have odd numbers, so 5389 was not the last car of the train...

I was on an R-44 on Saturday. Saw 4 sets. Took 3/4 that day.

One in the morning on the A then to the C and the other one coming home.

It was great seeing them again hehe.

Yup.

I also took an R-44 coming home today. Usual time I use to take the A, 2:19pm out of B'way Nassau to Queens.

Glad I was able to see me and my wife's favorite sets this past saturday too. Felt silly after getting off the A at Jay St. only to find out the A / C were running on the F in Manhattan lol. Luckily, the 2nd R-44 that followed was the C and it was a consist with car number 5460. I told my wife "hey things happen for a reason afterall lol. It's the same set from your birthday". Still have that pic of the car number on my phone too.

On the way coming home from the city we were lucky with another favorite set, it was consist 5380. The train we took coming home on our wedding day. She wanted an R-44 not a limo lol. Luck was on our side back in June.

Gonna miss them but at least these memories will last a life time.

Yes, I also have heard from someone who would know that R44 usage on the C was 'a loan'. Not that it is helpful now, but I caught one northbound at 34-8 at 1pm last Tuesday, the 24th. No car numbers, sorry, but I did notice that the aperture for the roll sign on the south motor was too small (top to bottom) to properly display the 'C'.

The traditional systems, NY, Boston, Philly and Chicago always had some bit of variety in a large part due to those systems having had their lines built by several different companies with their own needs, infrastructure constraints and car design concepts and, only after years of private operation, were taken over by regional transit agencies. The newer systems like WMATA, BART LAMTA etc, who built unified systems from the start, developed a standard design for all their rolling stock so they never had any variety to begin with. Now that the older systems have been taken over by their respective regional transit agencies, the trend is to standardize the appearance of their rolling stock as much as possible given the physical infrastructure constraints of the various lines that make up their respective systems. When you think about it though, the pre war lines of the NYCTS in many cases also lacked variety. Although the IRT had several different types of cars that were incompatible with each other, they were for the most part virtually identical in physical appearance the only small exceptions being the 1939 World's Fair cars and loosely, the deck roof Hi-Vs. Prior the the introduction of the D types, the BRT/BMT steels (often referred to as "standards") were an attempt at a standardized car design and with the exception of minor changes in the roof design and side destination signs, were for the most part identical in appearance. The IND R-1 through 9 also provided little if any variety in appearance and was also an attempt by an early transit agency to operate a fully standardized car fleet. Even if smaller car orders were to be placed, it would probably make no difference since the MTA will probably retain the same design regardless of the number of car purchased per order as was the case with the R-1/9s. Whether most railfans like it or not, the trend in these times is towards standardization of equipment so I wouldn't look for nay significant changes in car design on the NYCTS for the foreseeable future.

I expect going forward any new cars will need to be built for 100% compatibility with the existing cars, as long as the technology is viable.
