Fortunately, for those of us in the NYC area, a Texas Roadhouse opened last October on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow. For steak lovers, this place is great The prices about the same but the quality far superior to Outback's. A great place to eat while out busfanning or railfanning. Unsolicited opinion. ![]() |

I believe, but am not positive, that the two longest lines are in St. Louis and the River Line. |

They fit the wikipedia definition made by the guy that wrote the book on the topic. Especially the blue line in LA from Long Beach to LA. Maybe others.Real-world lines fit on a continuum between wholly urban street railways and full-fledged railroads. George W. Hilton and John F. Due, in The Electric Interurban Railways in America,[2] define an interurban as a system which shares most or all of four characteristics: Electric power Passenger service as primary emphasis Heavier, faster equipment than urban streetcars Operated on street trackage in cities but on roadside tracks or private rights-of-way in rural areas The definition of "interurban" is necessarily blurry. Some streetcar systems evolved partly into interurban systems with extensions or acquisitions, while other interurban lines became, effectively, light rail systems with no street running whatsoever, or became primarily freight-hauling railroads with a progressive loss of passenger service. Another distinction is made between "interurban" and "suburban". A suburban system is oriented toward a particular city center in a single urban area, serving primarily commuters who live in the suburbs of a city. An interurban is more like a regular railroad local train service, moving people from one city center to another with no single center. However, unlike a local train, the interurban serves a smaller region and has more frequent service, and is oriented to passenger rather than freight service, although some small-load freight service was common, especially in the days before trucks (lorries). |

They don't have the route length nor the commuter rail seating that was typical of interurbans. The cars often looked like miniature commuter trains. |

I'm not sure I would classify DART as an interurban. The towns it serve are considered suburbs of Dallas, although I suppose technically speaking, running from one town to another is considered an interurban. Now were it to run from Dallas to Ft. Worth (like the TRE, which is heavy rail), that to me would be a true interurban. If you think of the genesis of the word, it dates back to a time before towns 30 - 40 miles from a city were considered suburbs. Illinois Traction (later, Illinois Terminal RR) was a true interurban, running electric cars between St. Louis and Peoria, Illinois via Springfield (172 miles). |

Nice to get an update on Dallas. Pretty amazing that Dallas not only has plans for an extensive Light Rail network, but they are actually BUILDING it with the majority of the Green and Orange Lines set to open by the end of the year. I checked it out on Google Maps and its really there, almost entirely complete! This is pretty astonishing to see something like this in Texas and even more astonishing that it is not happening in Austin. Cool to see the new center section added to the LRV's. That will help with ADA issues which could be a real pain with the mini-highs and the platform bridge. Does anyone know if DART is buying new LRV's for their expanded service? Also does anyone know if they are changing the signaling from NYC Subway style waysides to a cab signaling system? You can see my pics of DART taken when I visited in 2007. http://acm.jhu.edu/~sthurmovik/Railpics/07-04-16_DART_EXCURSIONS/-Thumbnails.html |
