PHOTOS : 3 Days Worth Of Railfanning!!! Part II - Sunday |
|
Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Mon May 17 21:52:06 2010 We pick up Part II on a beautiful Sunday in Elizabeth, NJ. And of course, Amtrak and NJT light up the NEC in fine style!! And a pleasant surprise would come along later!! (TOTAL BONUS!!)Now, for the action!! I started by checking out the old CNJ right of way, and the CNJ station adjacent to Elizabeth Station....... Looking west on the old CNJ...... Looking east, as an MLV arrived upstairs eastward...... Waiting for a train that will never come!! :-( Looking north towards the CNJ station...... Now upstairs where trains certainly will come, and quite often!! The MLV still sits in the station!! Off to Penn (finally!! Though I think it waited for me to come shoot it!! :-D)...... Comin' atcha with that "Mixed Bag 'O' Train"!! (Somewhere in NJ, there is a conductor named Fishbowl crying his eyes out!! His "Mixed Bags" are all gone from the RVL, and loggin' miles on the NEC and NJCL!! Sorry, Fishbowl!! :-( ) How the trains come swoopin' in eastward!! Of course, them trains come swoopin' on westward too!! This Arrow came swoopin' in, and on the end was a rather odd addition!! Note, this Arrow III consist, 10 cars, was running pans (pantographs) up and seemingly under its own power, but what caught my attention was an NJT GP40-2 #4301, seemingly being towed thru by the Arrows!! Note, the first shot was a blunder, the timing was off, but it came out sharp!! And #4301 on the east end, seemingly being towed by the Arrows. No crew members were in the cab, and this definitely was too fast to be a shoving move!! This led to a "Geep & Toaster" shot!! More swoop ins!! Amtrak #97, New York Penn Station to Miami, FL, blasts by some MLVs!! And of course, always room for ACELA!!! :-D Even an MLV swoops thru!! And now for a pleasant bonus to end this nice visit to Elizabeth off!! In a sight one would truly be lucky to see on the NEC, a Conrail local freight, from either Oak Island or Waverly Yard in Newark, though destination is unknown (my best guesses for destinations.....Browns Yard, South Amboy NJ via the NJCL, or Metuchen Yard) comes thundering on thru. Rare to get a good daylight freight here, so yes I consider myself quite lucky!! And note the consist, which I have nicknamed "The 1999 Consist", in which we have an NS "Thoroughbred" GP38-2 #5284, a Conrail Quality painted (NS owned) GP38-2 #5286, and CSX SD40-2 #8855 "Oak Pointer" (note the third rail notches in the plow!! These girls get around!! :-D)), bringing to show the transition of Conrail into both CSX and NS with the 1999 split. What a catch!! CSX 8855...... CR "Conrail Quality" (NS) 5286...... NS 5284, and a Pan Am Railways boxcar sporting that famous aviation logo of the 70's and the 80's!! Quite a sizable freight too!! At the end of this freight was a piece of equipment I have never actually seen in person, if I recall right known as a "moving platform", or a successor of the caboose, and as I understand it, this car sees action mainly in Southern NJ CR lines, and in the backwoods branches (Freehold Secondary, Amboy Secondary, etc.) here in Northern and Central NJ. This is used by the conductor and brakeman as a platform to accomplish reverse moves, if I recall right. If anyone knows the technical designation of what this car is, what it is called, and its full range of uses and functions, the info would be very helpful and appreciated!! :-) And as this freight departs on its way, so do we!! We shall catch a nice Monday morning worth of train action in Part III!! Thank you all for viewing!! I hope you have all enjoyed!! :-) STAY TUNED.....MORE TO COME!! ;-) :-D |

Well, LION must say that while nice photos, the catenary is a major distraction. Thank goodness more sensible properties went with the third rail instead.ROAR |

Part II - Sunday, posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Mon May 17 21:52:06 2010. Thanks, Paul.Good photos. It was quite impressive when both 4-track railroads were there. Loved to watch trains from one or both of the stations. I was always appreciative of Pennsy's heavy-duty catenary. On the PRR's eastbound local track, on that curve, is where people were killed by an eastbound Pennsy train, while standing on the track, watching the JFK funeral train pass westbound. Lee squeak |

Part II - Sunday, posted by ebtmikado on Tue May 18 11:25:20 2010. The Pennsy catenary is just priceless!! The NEC is never short of the action, and it still keeps the Broadway Of Steel name, and holds that reputation down very well!!That freight was indeed a very lucky catch, since I have not ever caught a single freight on the NEC south (west) of New York Penn, while I have notice many others have. My turn finally came, and I am not gonna lie, I am blown away by the "1999 Consist", of all 3 parts of the Conrail merger all in one loco consist!! That in itself was priceless!! :-) |
