I'm amused to see that they've put in a price escalation formula for options in case the same thing happens with R160 Option 2.

Has there been any recent MTA rolling stock contract where options purchased earlier were not exercised?

Well this comes out of the Capital Budget so there might be some $$ there and they wouldn't place the order if no $$ notice also it is the Capital Budget ended last year too so who know what they'd do

The US/Canada exchange rate's so bad that Bombardier isn't even bothering to bid? I wonder if there's other factors in play, too - they've been missing out on a lot of MTA action as of late, I wonder if they pissed someone off?

The M7 seemed to be pretty good cars, I would'nt be surprised if the MTA went back to them for the M9. Besides, Doesn't Bombardier own the design to the M7? In that other thread about the M9s it was posted that the M9 will basically be an M7 with updated components. IMO I think Bombardier will scope that M9 order up.

Bummer, I wanted Bombardier to win this. Just for the sole fact that the TA would have to take cars from the 2/5 fleet for the (7), thus putting SMEEs on the (2) or (5) lines once again.

Actually, if the #7 was connected to 60 St Line at Queensboro Plaza, the only real issue would be the Flushing tunnel which might be B div specs for all I know.

It was built to B div specs. IIRC all subways & el's built after 1920 were required to be built to the wider dimentions.

I would guess the 2 because then the west side would be all R62 and the east side would be all R142

I can see them giving all the R142As to the the (7), transfer the (2)'s R142 fleet to the East Side and then we'll have an all R62 fleet on the West Side and all NTT on the East Side.

It may not necessarily be the 6 that gets them. Since there are 2 services that run on the 6 and basically only one on the 2, it wouldn't surprise me if the R-62As go to the 2 and the R-142s are transferred to the 6.

Well that pretty much can mean the 6 is getting the R62As back.
I guess the trade off would be to view the 6 via the rfw.

Unless the R62As have digital signs at the front and the sides to change at the flip of a 'switch' for either the 2 or 5, that's never going to happen. And even if it was teh R142s from the 2/5 that is sent to Flushing, the 4 and/or the 6 will then have to give up their R142/As to keep the 2/5 all R142s.

If the R-62As go back to the mainline on any route, then the remaining single will probably be unitized and have the transverse cabs fitted.

Imo, I still kinda have to doubt the 2 because of the Flatbush terminal. But I would say it is most likely the 6 because the R62As have the LED signs that can change for local or express.

One interesting thing to note is that there is a provision to have certain of the non cab cars converted to cab cars. The problem with that might be that the cab cars have symmetrical doors while the non cab cars have staggered doors like the redbirds possibly making installation of an operating cab difficult if not outright impossible.

The difference is that on the 6 unlike the 7, the locals and expresses have 2 different terminals and even on the modified 62As, those signs can't be changed from the cab.

OK, if the option is picked up for 123 more cars....
Can someone explain to me if these cars (specifically the 88, I can understand the singles) are really needed? Is there a shortage in the A Div. that I'm not aware of? Where are you gonna store them?

Well that's true. Then again the 4 could be all R62As. I just don't know about R62As on the 2/5 lines because of that terminal - that's just one thing I can't get over.
But I'm just one person. And I wouldn't be against R62As on the 2 though, it would be pretty neat and something different for a change.

Perhaps, but it's not like there's a mandate that bans older cars on the east side. The 2's yard is in the Bronx - so there's no influence on what trains have to be on the 2.

Good point, this order will create a surplus of cars. Even with the Javits extension, it will still be more than enough cars.

Good question. What happens if one car has a lot more milage than another car in the set? Do they have to 'run up the milage' on the lower car to get them even or can they just link them all together when they find all 5 cars for the set?
It was a shame imo, that they broke up the 2-car 'pairs' a few years ago. Now everything's back to random singles.

Um, No.

After we build the Myrtle-Fifth Avenue Subway, with its branch going out Northern Boulevard, the need for high capacity on the (7) will be diminished. Thus the (R) train, running through the 60th Street tunnel would serve it nicely, and could even live in the Corona Yard.

This eliminates those two sharp curves by the bridge.

The NEW route of the (7) would then come out of the S'way tunnel, follow LIE for a short way, picking up some new stops at some new Park and Rides, and then running express to Kennedy Airport via the Lower Montauk ROW and the old LIRR Rockaway ROW.

The new and re-vitalized (W) train will serve Astoria to 9th Ave in Bklyn. (Local In Manhattan)

The (N) would cover 71st Street via the 63rd Street Tunnel and the (Q) would do 125th Street
