The LIRR and MNR Hudson/Harlem lines stopped on train bar cars years ago but still sell drinks (alchohol and non-alcohol) from vendor carts at Penn, Jamaica, Flatbush, and Grand Central. Idea is for the New Haven MNR trains to follow suit, but there appears to be a large number of regular riders who like the amenity. Wait and see.

Years ago, when the first wave of bomb cars showed up on the hudson line, there were no bar cars at all & the riders bitched. So the railroad caved & took #6152 & ripped out several rows of seats & luggage racks, installed a pre fab bar & presto! a bar car.

When I first moved upstate, I'd ride in the bar car & met several good people & some turned out to be friends for life. Good quality workin class folk who just happened to like a cocktail & a smoke to wind down from the day.

But the beginning of the end was the smoking ban that took effect in 1988 IIRC. A drink without a smoke?? Impossible!!

But they did'nt get the message to stop smoking in the bar car intil plainclosed cops showed up one day & hit these working class types with $50 DAT's

To wrap this up, the suits decided to end Hudson Line bar car service to Poughkeepsie, ripped out the pre-fab bar, replaced the seats & #6152 is now just another coach in the fleet.

But any trainpersons who post here & someday work that car, stop in the middle where the bar was, on the right side, you can still see holes in the wall where the NYS licquor license frame was. Hold one hand over your heart & the other over your liver!

If those walls could talk..

The 6152 was regularly assigned to the 512 to Poughkeepsie. In those days that was the only real express on the Hudson Line. Its first stop was Pekskill. It was always a seven car train with the bar car in the middle. One day before we left GCT the conductor made an annoucement that we would have to change equipment because a paasenger was having a heart attack in one of the cars. They put us on the equipment of a following train which only had six cars. I figured that the new train would be overcrowded but is was'nt. The bar cars passengers remained with the bar car. Once the sick passenger was removed that train would eventually go to Poughkeepsie. They were a very dedicated crew.

Until about 1983 or so many of the trains on the Harlem and Hudson Lines were standard coaches and several were former cafe or parlor cars. They would serve coffee and donuts on the inbound trips in the AM and then serve drinks going outbound at night. In the late 1970's the M-2's would operate as true cafe cars serving midday sandwiches and snacks.

The following disclaimer from Jim Cameron, Chairman of the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council:

"Fellow commuters...

"Never let the facts get in the way of a good story".

This old newsroom mantra apparently was the rule when the NY Times yesterday ignored the facts and presented the headline... "One for the Road? Bar Cars May Face a Last Call"

Though three members of the CT Rail Commuter Council worked with reporter Michael Grynbaum to get the story right, he ignored the facts in favor of a sexier story.

The reporter implied that when the new M8 cars arrive, the 8 existing bar cars would be replaced. Not so! The 8 bar cars we have all have undergone recent rehab's and can run for 10 - 15 more years.

He also implied that "the recession" might force a rethinking of plans to order new bar cars.

The Commuter Council, meeting last night, was reassured by both Metro-North and CT DOT that there are no plans to eliminate bar cars on Connecticut trains. CDOT also told the Council they would share design concepts with us for new M8 bar cars, currently under bid from Kawasaki.

The issue of continued if not improved bar car service has been a priority of the Commuter Council for the 25 years of its existence. We will continue that advocacy... and seek a correction from the NY Times for its sloppy reporting.

"Cheers"!

Very cool that they have an EP-4 on film. As nice as Raymond Loewy's stying is, the streamlining of the EP-4 appears to be a lot more practical and the cab less claustrophobic than that of the GG-1 . . . and it's a pity that the NH didn't have more money so that the EP-4 could go all the way to Boston via an electrified Air Line . . . (after all, the NH was the one that gave the PRR the idea to use the 2-C+C-2 wheel arrangement)
