Favorite color of subway cars??

Without a doubt, the GOH Redbirds on the #2 (1987) were #1 in my book. # 2 would be the TA Grey with the blue stripe.

Your #2 is my #1 (including the blue striped R44/R46s as it was kinda the same scheme but with silver instead of grey) my #2 would be the bright reds of the R29s

rbseabeach, I loved:

1) The Aquamarine and Cream of the R36WF cars

2) The Turquoise and Ivory of the R10s

3) The I.R.T. Redbirds

4) The R27/R30 Redbirds

5) The Silver and Blue

Hands down, INMO, the Aquamarine & Cream of the R36WF cars were the best paint job applied to any NYC rapid transit equiptment, although at the time the TA simply refered them as blue & white.
Showed some imagination. When they came down the track on a clear day, & the sun hit them just right, they really stood out!!

I would have to agree but the problem is I was too young when they came out. The first time I got to ride one, it was bombed with graffiti!! The first time I saw one in mint condition was at the transit museum.

Man you missed a sight. I was a kid delivering the Long Island Star Journal out in Woodside I saw my first R36WF comming down from 74th st to 69th st (fisk ave) on a bright sunny day. I believe it was just put in service because i noticed that the between car pantographs had no scrape marks on them.

When growing up & all you saw was the drab lookin R12-14's, these 36's when they came along actually drew attention! Including from an entry level train buff auch as myself.

Lived in Flushing when the World's Fair site first opened. The trains smelled like new (not cars) but machinery. The seats were so new and clean, as well as the windows. They were no doubt the pride of the 7 line. But I believe that color makes things feel alive and appear vibrant. The TOMC serves a wonderful purpose and consists loaded with cars of each of those colors would be awesome. Greens, blues, grays and reds. Gray with orange trim. Imagination and beauty.

The redbirds looked good too with some attention to detail applied. The deeper shade of red with the silver roof with the black bonnet & black between car pantographs showed to me anyway, that a true attempt was made to make equiptment in the twilight of their career look good.

On the other hand, the brighter red paint job slapped on the R-10s in the early 60's for example, to me looked like a quickie Earl Scheib job.

"We'll paint any (subway) car for...!!" :-)

They were the pride of the whole system at the time. After all, was'nt 9306 flatbedded down (or up) 5th Ave during the 1963 Labor Day parade. And were'nt there signs that read "follow the blue arrow to worlds fair trains" all over the system with a R36WF superimposed??
After the Fair closed, the signs were retained, and updated, to read "follow the blue arrow to flushing trains"

I remember getting off a '36 at QP to go to Astoria in 1964 & got on a Triplex. Talk about a time warp!!!

I have to agree, the 1964 turquoise two-tone on the R36 WFs was probably the best scheme ever used. Even somewhat psychedelic in design. The R32s would have looked stunning in it as well had they been built by St. Louis in LAHT.

#1 all time: 1964 turquoise two-tone (Blue Arrow/World's Fair), R36. Some cars retained remannts of their original paint until the very end!

#2: Kale green, 1985: pretty much overlooked, only appeared on 110 R10s, 12 R33s and 1 R17 and R21 each. Eventually abandoned in favor of "Gunn red" for all LAHT SMEE cars.

Other favorites:

1962 bright red, R29/33/36 ML

Deep maroon (R17, 1955)

Yes, it was 9306 that was the first World's Fair car delivered (9/1963) and debuted at the Labor Day Parade that month.

I remember getting off a '36 at QP to go to Astoria in 1964 & got on a Triplex. Talk about a time warp!!!

In 1964 you could have also stood at QBP and seen brand new trains on both the Astoria and Flushing lines: R32 and R36s respectively.

They are my favorite too. A very sentimental attachment to that moment in NYC when the World's Fair opened, Shea Stadium opened, and those brightly colored cars stood out from the dirst and grey blandness of what otherwise was a badly deteriorating system.

Runner up: R-32's in their original look with blue doors. It's been downhill ever since.

Orange was a late-70s/early-80s thing. The "MTA Makeover" of 1969-70 had a pale blue or pistachio enamel that was supposed to look similar to the interiors of the 40s/42s. The cream/orange change also had a bright silver and brighter blue exterior.

The NYCTA designed most of their own paint schemes in house, the red R29/33/36, blue two-tone R10s and R36s seemed to be a in-house style movement at the time. Of course it was David Gunn himself who proposed the kale green and fox red colors during the later 1980s.
