If you go into Greenpoint and Williamsburg you can follow the old right of way for the New York and Manhattan Beach narrow gauge railroad Evergreen branch from the waterfront terminal at the Inlet across to Bushwick fairly easily. Most of the buildings that were built around it are good clues (some at the terminal I think were built for the RR), follow along the foot paths going from Kent Ave. through where automotive high is now, through Mccarren Park. You lose a little bit where housing got built, then it picks up again as an alleyway behind houses on Richardson St., then swing off towards Bushwick by Morgan Ave. Pretty cool for a railroad that was pulled up 25 years before even these pics were taken.In Greenpoint, you can see how huge the old Box Street carhouse was. In most shots you can see trolleys operating on Manhattan Ave, Nassau and other streets that had them, some are clear enough to see the line poles. Pretty cool! |
