Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Mon Feb 8 19:37:27 2010 From Trains Magazine News Wire......Engineer found shot to death beside tracks Published: Monday, February 08, 2010 EUGENE, Ore. — Portland & Western Railroad engineer Ronald Leo Langlois, 44, was found shot to death early Sunday. Langlois and his conductor were making switching moves, and when Langlois didn't respond to a radio call, the conductor investigated and found his body. Police are investigating the death as a homicide. How sad, man!! :-( I can imagine the danger faced by the CSX guys switching Hunts Point Market after hours, or the New York & Atlantic guys in Bushwick and down the Bay Ridge Branch, or working CSAO Newark (Oak Island) area locals in NJ!! Really sad, man!! :-( |

Normally the engineer does not leave the Engine, unless its with crew to get lunch or dinner. |

I would lean towards a confrontation with someone, more than likely a trespasser. In my time, I have worked with one engineer who, indeed, stopped a train to confront a trespasser, or in our case, a group of trespassers on the right of way east of CP 235 and were fouling Track 5 (New Canaan) as we headed up the New Canaan Branch. While I agree with his outrage and reasoning, and having observed the scene from my operating position, what he did was very risky and pretty stupid considering if one of these guys had a firearm, the scene could definitely have taken a tragic turn, especially since it was very tense and quite a bit of hostility was present, and this engineer's level of vulgarity and attitude was kind of borderline out of line!! |

Yes, I have seen that too. But, I suspect that DRN may be right because if he was confronting someome wouldn't he have alert the others on radio? Also, wouldn't a commotion have made the others hear and be alert? Just thinking. Don't know how far all were to each other but just seems like he probably knew the person and that was when he went down and got it :( |

Curious.... it seems that the intersection given in the news report (the KTMR website, that is) leads us to Dane Security Systems, Inc. whose website is, even more curious, currently suspended. Perhaps the train crew was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the engineer saw something that cost him his life. |
