Does anyone know of any abandoned trackage in Northern or Central New Jersey that is accessible from a public park or public roadway?

Preferably an line where the tracks are still in place

Please post here or email me privately with directions

If Princeton counts as Central Jersey, you may want to consider something we do from time to time....

Ride NJT (or drive) to Princeton Junction & ride the Dinky to Princeton. When you board the Dinky tell the crew that you want to walk back from Princeton. The hike is about 2 miles & we have never been turned down by the NJT crew. You can shoot the train on the way back.

As long as you stay on the (abandoned) 2nd main track you should be OK. Just watch yourself at the Route 1 overpass, & TELL THE CREW you are out there.

The Former Erie Greenwood Lake Division (NY&GL Railroad) is accessible
in the Riverdale section of Pompton, NJ. southward, it runs toward Pompton PLains, Pequannock, Wayne and the Greenwood Lake-Boonton Line at Mountain View. Northward, it goes to Pompton Jct., where it crosses
the NYS&W, then on to Haskell, Wanaque-Midvale, and at one time,
all the way to Sterling Forest on Greenwood Lake.

Thanks for the tip but what I want to do won't lend itself to a 2 mile walk. The girls that will be with me will be in high heeled shoes - they will also have several outfit changes, hence the need for a car...

This sounds like something I may do on my own though!

There's the CNJ main east of Cranford through Elizabeth and if you really want something different, just north of Harrison along the Passaic is the no longer used NX Drawbridge with a small stretch of track on the aproach.
