The Dinkins Administration DOT drew up a wish list in 1993 which included just such a tunnel but with IND connections:

From "Developing a Long Range Transportation Plan" pages 86 and 87:

"It would run from a connection with the IND system in lower Manhattan, under New York Bay to St. George and a connection with the Staten Island Rapid Transit line to Tottenville, which would become part of the subway system. The connection point in Manhattan could either be with the Eighth Avenue line's stub-end terminal in the World Trade Center, or with the Second Avenue line at the southeastern corner of the Financial District."

People behaving badly are people behaving badly, regardless of whether or not they are Yankee fans. I am also sure that all of the people who started trouble were Yankee fans.

DOT should have made provisions like the MTA to have more service. They failed miserably. And if SIRT didn't have additional service, that part of the MTA failed also. In crowded conditions, unforturnately people get anxious, tempers get hot and this sort of thing tends to happen. I've seen it at Penn Station when there are massive train delays and you didn't have people coming from a parade. Doesn't excuse the behavior however. In crowded conditions, it only takes a couple of idiots and trouble starts rolling.

Many people had an enjoyable experience at the parade, however, there are always some drunken idiots (I saw three guys walking to an LIRR station at 6:30AM drinking beer) or hoodlums who spoil it for some people. Usually its kids (any complaints I heard from people this year were about teenagers behaving badly).

As for not knowing the history of a team, this is no different than 86 when Met Fever took over and everybody was a Met fan and most couldn't even tell you who Buddy Harrelson was or when the Mets came into existence.

Not necessarily. For example, at the annual Puerto Rican Day parade, from what I've seen first hand and heard about in the past, most of the trouble is started by non Puerto Ricans.

Staten Island's population density doesn't really support the expense. Maybe if they piggyback it on a new water tunnel or a freight tunnel...

Any connection to the rest of the NYC subway system is unlikely to ever be built; I'd expect the HBLR extended across a new Bayonne Bridge before a study is even conducted for a tunnel.

When I look at a potential place to live, I look at the WHOLE picture. And that includes ease of traveling around the area and my daily commute. Sure, Staten Island might have nicer looking houses, lower crime, and better schools than the rest of the city, but that's only PART of the picture. You can get all those things, PLUS easier commutes and better roads in most of central New Jersey. Sure, the property taxes in NJ might be higher, but everything else in Staten Island is more expensive.

Granted.

However, the thing that gets me is that people move there and THEN complain about all the problems that have been plagueing Staten Island since the 60's. I know I have said this many times on these boards, but it seems like Staten Island is the only place this is happening to. You never or rarely hear about people moving to Nassau, Suffolk, or Westchester counties and then complain about the lack of public transportation in those places. They moved there knowing that was the case. No surprises.

Possibly. There are too many other variables to draw a single conclusion. The depression, WWII, the decline of the private transit companies overall...

For instance; if Moses never came to power in New York, there are a number of public works projects such as pools, parks, Niagara Power that may never have come to fruition. But WWII resulted in the development of the Interstate system, so highways would still be built.

And even without Moses, highways were being developed and built in and around the city.

It could be argued that if the transit network developed as originally planned, there wouldn't be a need for as many highways as were built, since city residents wouldn't have seen a need to have a car. Too many what-ifs to play with.
