One of the professions I've practised during my life is copy-editor and proofreader. (And yes, I know there are often typos in my posts here. I'm too old to be born-digital!) When I was taught the trade in 1967 or so, the ruling was (and it still is) that if the last letter of the abbreviation is the same as the last letter of the full word, then there is no full stop - hence Dr and Mr - whereas if the last letter is not that of the full word - as in Prof. or Rev. - the full stop is used. |

This is good news for us regular users of St Pancras (Thameslink and East Midlands platforms). Nice though the 'new' St Pancras station is, with all its shops and restaurants, it gets tedious to have to trek all the way through it to reach the Tube station. The new ticket hall will also neatly serve the new side entrance to Kings Cross mail line station, now under construction. |

I find the differences between English and American-English interesting. I never knew about this particular difference. Olog is correct. We always put a period after abbreviations that are capitalized. We don't have that rule about the abbreviation ending in the same letter as the full word. |

According to Fytton it's been that way for a while.A change in the US over the last few decades is dropping the periods in acronyms. For example it's now FBI and not F.B.I. IINM the NYT still adds the periods. |
