Posted by kp5308 on Fri Nov 6 21:05:34 2009 While in LA I wanted to ride the Gold Line because of the history of the route. A few images from the trip:LAUPT: 700 series cars: 200 series cars: 700's interior: Shops are about a mile east of the Union Station: Rode to Sierra Madre Villa-end of track (for now): Shot a few at Mission in S Pasadena: ![]() ![]() Before returning to LA: Again, any additional info on equipment or corrections to this post are welcome. Like the San Diego post I couldn't find much info about the cars I rode, but they sure turned a mean wheel on that ex-Santa Fe ROW! |

In the link to the history of the line the original designation is Blue Line. I found this on a website about public art along the route that explains the origin of this:"Called the Pasadena Blue Line, this line was originally conceived as an extension of the Blue Line that opened in 1992 linking downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach. The planned route of the Blue Line initially went from Long Beach to Union Station along Alameda, and from there to Pasadena. However, when constructed, the Blue Line was re-routed to go west on Washington from Alameda and then north on Flower where it ended at Seventh Street. Even after the change in routing, the line between Union Station and Pasadena continued to be called the Pasadena Blue Line, though consideration was given to renaming it the Rose Line, in deference to the annual Tournament of Roses in Pasadena. The name Rose Line, however, was not adopted and in 2001 the line was renamed the Gold Line." |

Coincidentally, it's the one that doesn't go into the ghettoNo coincidence here. It was suggested by a native that if I have enuff time to ride only one, the Gold Line should be my first choice. It absolutely pays to ask questions & do research before going into an area you are not familar with. Little story about the CA trip: I was supposed to meet up with a West Coast foamer for a day of San Diego fanning. On the way down I-5 he called & cancelled due to a family emergency. Had I not had a "Plan B" I would have been screwed! I did some xtra invesigating of the area even though all indications were I didn't need to, & it was good thing I did so. Would have missed out on alot: |

It was suggested by a native that if I have enuff time to ride only one, the Gold Line should be my first choice. If I was doing a Southern California trip, I'd actually camp in San Diego, explore their system, and then take a day trip via Amtrak to LA to ride the Gold Line and maybe the Red Line. Metrolink isn't interesting to me, and I've been on the BBD coaches on Caltrain. The Blue and Green Lines are in areas that are a bit out of my range for my personal safety*, and I'm not a bus foamer so the Orange Line isn't of interest. Maybe I'll wait for Expo to open up to consider riding around Southern California since I'm still itching to ride other systems.** *I am 5'7 and 135 lbs. For what it's worth, I'm an easy target for criminals, so I try to avoid unsafe areas on foot... **e.g. I'd kill to see some European systems like Cologne Stadtbahn, but otherwise, Portland and Seattle have priority for light rail networks. Hell, even Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Chicago are ahead on the list... |

Probably as far as cities go as well although LA is much, much larger and has lots more to do. But if you do come to LA you would feel safe on the blue line. It's not 1994 anymore out here. The gang violence is way, way down. |

The gang violence is way, way down. Two of my (black) co-workers are from SoCal, and they seem to think otherwise... Probably as far as cities go as well although LA is much, much larger and has lots more to do. Maybe it's me, but LA isn't on my list of must visit cities. I'm more inclined to go to somewhere like San Francisco which is much denser and provides a nice urban environment for walking around, exploring neighbourhoods, and street photography. For the same reasons, you're unlikely to find me in Atlanta or Houston which are even worse... |

San Francisco is denser than LA on the whole, but only because it's relatively small and compact (like Boston). The densely populated part of LA is not only more dense than San Francisco, but has more people as well. |

And people mostly mind their own business nearly ll of the time. And it's not like you have to get off in Watts or Compton although it's usually safe to do so. |

I'd actually camp in San DiegoWe stayed in Capistrano Beach, roughly halfway between the two. Five miles from the San Juan Capistrano station was pretty convenient, & parking was FREE. Apparently there is a dispute between SJC & whoever over maintaining the central parking meter machine. The box was covered with a bag with a lengthy finger pointing explanation. |

We don't have a super dense area like Manhattan, but our suburbs are much more densely populated than NYC suburbs. LA has an undeserved reputation for sprawl. I guess that it does sprawl, but it's dense sprawl, not the typical suburban sprawl that people think of like with sunbelt cities. Cities and towns 30 miles from downtown LA touch border to border and are 5-10,000 ppl per sq mile. |

Extra awww, then....Actually, I did get off there and took a few pics, I just didn't leave the platform. I'd somehow scheduled it so that I rode the Gold Line after I'd checked out of my hotel, so I was burdened with all of my luggage; there was nowhere to stash my bags for a few hours before heading down to San Diego. |

You wish! :DI took 17 batches of photos on that trip, and I'm about halfway through the 12th. Of course, a "batch" corresponds to the time period from when I empty my memory card to when I empty it again, so they all vary in size. But consider that I also haven't posted any pictures from the summer of 2008, so it's more than just selecting the good photos. *mumbles vaguely about Photobucket cutting the storage limit in half* |

Actually, the only really dicey areas of the Green Line are from Vermont through Avalon. Imperial/Wilmington/Rosa Parks isn't in a great area, but the Rail Control Center is adjacent, and (I think) the LA Sheriff's Transit Bureau, so it's fairly safe, as long as you don't venture away from the station. East of Rosa Parks or west of Vermont are pretty safe. This was as of the time I departed Southern California (July 1998), things may have changed now. |

Mainly because the gangs aren't as active. And trains seem safe regardless. I feel safer on the blue line in Watts at midnight than I would feel walking or even in my car. |

That's pretty much how I felt (though I was never on the Blue Line that late, I think the latest I ever rode was around 9 PM). One time, I had to catch the 6:30 AM San Diegan at Union Station to travel down to a business conference in San Diego. So I drove to Artesia Station and got one of the first Blue Line trains of the day (it was so early, we didn't meet any southbound trains until we were on Washington Blvd!), then got the Red Line to UNS and got there in plenty of time. All transit trip, as upon arrival in San Diego, got on the SD Trolley Bayside (now Orange) Line to the Convention Center. I was not worried at all about being at Artesia that early. |
