Seems that there is some interest in Chicago's Howard ST terminal. The other topic had the treminal pictured in the old days. Since the 1970s, the yard north of the station has been rebuilt and enlarged. Then the interlockings south of the station expanded. Finally a new station house and platforms were finished, featuring above the track fare collection and an artrium. Here are some photos of today's terminal from three different dates to give some perspectives. Hope you enjoy.

Approaching the south end aboard a NB Purple line train. The artrium is above track level. Howards consists of two island platforms.

Another view of the south end about 15 months ago during weekend consruction...note the baricaded tracks.

Photobucket

The view form the inside looking south. In the distance is the Jarvis interlocking where most Red line trains go from the inside to the outside tracks NB and the opposite SB.

So far my only platform views came when the APTA Convention was hosted by the CTA last summer and the two historic cars took visitors to the Skokie Shops. The visitors had arrived from downtown aboard the two 3200s. First view is looking south, the second looks north.

Photobucket

Here's a north end view. The "Not In Service" Purple line came off the ramp in the background. You Easterners might say, "Oh, a flying junction!" NO way, sorry. In front of the ramps is the normal turning loop used by the Red line. The Yellow line goes beneath both in a trench leading to Skokie and the Shops. The building on the right contains two interlocking towers.

Gettin' outta Dodge...or in this case Howard ST, the Historic cars head towards Skokie Shops. You can clearly see the Red line turning track and the ramps to Evanston (Purple line). Until next time.

I'd love to ride on those 4000s nonstop to Merchandise Mart or even Belmont.:) I can remember hearing an F# above middle C as they went by Bryn Mawr in the olden days.

Hard to believe it's the same place. I haven't been through the new terminal yet.

Was the terra cotta "North Shore Lines" sign that was uncovered at street level left in place or removed?

I didn't go downstairs, but I imagine it would be saved. There are stairways on that side of Howard ST that are still being finished.

What about the railfan bridge at the north end of the platform? The one that overlooks the yards.

The bridge at at the north end no longer exists. You can still get good views from either platform and personnel have never hasseled me.

Is that little wooden overpass on the yard end still there? That was just great for photos.

As you see this question was previously asked, LOL. No, the bridge is gone, never to return. There is no need for it, that is the reason its no longer there. Offices have been relocated to the south end of the Howard ST terminal. They have now given you a beautiful artrium with windows on both north and south sides...and there are seats
