What runs now on the tail between Edgeware & Hammersmith ?

Circle Line schedules now are inconsistent and delay prone. The amount of time it takes to complete a circle is seldom divisible into a integer number of minutes for train intervals. There may be a couple of minutes of slack around Tower Bridge, but they can't recover much time. Then they have to shuffle Metropolitan and District Line trains with them.

The District Line itself has 5 end-point permutations with only one station in common, or at least that was the case when I was there last in 1993.

I am surprised they just don't expound on Metro and Dist Line schedules and abolish the Circle Line designation per se.

They promise trains on the Circle Line will become more reliable and evenly spaced. Trains every five minutes between Hammersmith and Royal Oak.

Perhaps a silly question, but how can you extend a circle?
Wouldn't you have to make a new circle????

Those were my thoughts exactly.....so I guess it's not really the Circle line anymore....let me think of a good name for it....I know we can call it the yellow line (and the District line the green line and the Central line the red line and the Picadilly line the navy line and the Northern line the black line...what ingenious names!)

I'm sorry, but I must protest this. Reliability issues aside, the whole point of a circle is to go around and around on a seemingly endless loop. This "extension" would make the so-called "Circle" line a misnomer. A more appropriate name would be the Spiral line.

Another question is what will be done with the Hammersmith & City line? This new Spiral line would essentially put another line on the only H&C stations currently not served by other lines.

Thta is correct. This stretdh will now have a doubled frequency (12 tph versus 6 before), with 6 tph Hammersmith & City Line trains to & from Whitechapel/Barking, and 6 tph 'Circle' Line trains.

There is considerable scepticism about the ability of the layout of Edgware Road station to cope with the new service pattern.

That is correct - stations Hammersmith (H&C station) to Royal Oak inclusive get a doubled service, as the announcement makes clear.

One big advantage of the new scheme is that it eliminates the game of 'guess the station' at Paddington. *All* trains between Paddington and Baker Street, Great Portland Street, Euston Square, Kings Cross St Pancras, Farringdon, Barbican, Moorgate, and Liverpool Street will use the Hammersmith & City line station at Paddington (aka platforms 16 & 17 in Paddington mail line station). If you artrive into Paddington mail line station the only time you'll need to go the Circle Line station at Paddington is if you need to head in the direction of Notting Hill Gate and High Street Kensington. It is to be hoped that Network Rail puts up appropriate new signage, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

What sounds interesting is that passengers entraining at Edgeware Rd will have to board a train with the destination sign reading "Edgeware Rd" in order to travel to stations on the clockwise side of the circle. There will be two counter clockwise trains at Edgeware Rd bound for Hammersmith. Those that have already made the counter clockwise trip around the circle and will go directly to Hammersmith and those that are originating at Edgeware Rd and will make the complete counterclockwise circle before traveling to Hammersmith. It's almost like an NYCTA passenger being at Jay St and wanting a train to Queens. Both S/B A trains and N/B F trains go to Queens but in opposite directions and from opposite platforms.

Hammersmith H&C Line station is a three-track terminus. It should be able to handle 12 tph; other three-track termini on the Underground manage higher frequencies than that.

The signage question is going to be interesting. At the moment Circle Line trains are simple signed as 'Circle Line' on the front of the trains, and I suspect this will continue, to avoid the kinds of confusion you mention. However, it may be that once a counterclockwise Circle Line train has arrived at Liverpool Street, the destination will be changed to read 'Hammersmith'. Station signage would need to be changed to tell people wanting to reach Circle Line stations beyond Paddington to change at Edgware Road.

Platform departure indicators at Edgware Road will - I predict - read 'Hammersmith' for all H&C *and* Circle Line trains continuing to Hammersmith, and 'Circle Line' for the trains starting at Edgware Road and heading towards High St Kensington.

Well... kippers stink. If I went in to the chip shop and asked for 'bangers and chips' they would probably tell me to Foxtrot Oscar and come back when I wasn't drunk. And as for bubble and squeak, I don't even know what it is.

The name is very familiar but I had forgotten what it is. Wikipedia describes it is a traditional English dish made with the shallow-fried leftover vegetables from a roast dinner. We must have had it often during World War II.

No, that isn't correct. The through trains (to and from Baker Street) use tracks 1 & 4; terminating trains use the centre tracks, 2 & 3. I am assuminmg that this will cointinue to be the case. I'm hoping to go to Edgware Road on 13 December to see how the chaos develops...

In its modern manifestation, it is previously cooked potatoes and cabbage mixed together and then shallow-fried. It ends up tasting a little like hash browns with cabbage in. London cafes now usually call it just 'bubble'.

As for kippers, well yes, they do make a smell in the house when you cook them. It's best either to get them in a restaurant if they are available - hotels sometimes have them as a breakfast option - or buy the 'boil-in-the-bag' sort which confines the cooking smell!

Sadly, there is no way I can get there that early on a Sunday morning. Unless I drive, but I'd presumably have to leave home about 4 a.m., and my enthusiasm for first trains isn't quite that great.
