It's the same old issues and no one is willing to make any compromises. If the workers strike this time, I think there will be a backlash on both sides by riders

Well, I hope they do what is right, which I am not sure of since I am not privvy to the data. But, if they do strike they should do it in time for the World Series which can force SEPTA to settle quickly. But, I think both sides IMHO need to compromise.

not clear how Philly residents get vengence on SEPTA--isn't the board made up of appointees including the suburbanites who are usually willing to take a City Division strike?

welcome back to the arguments about Taylor, arbitration, public necessity and convenience, etc. I DO NOT wish to rehash them in full. I will say I am under the impression that the suburban/urban divide is a lot more ugly in SEPTA territory than in some others. As well, IINM Harrisburg's attitude (that is, the Philly despising reps from much of the rest of the state) is not very helpful either. Corrections of error invited--it is 40 + years since I lived in Germantown commuting on the RDG or PTC to a bookstore long since closed.

Expand that; there may be a nationwide backlash against the TWU of America in all likelihood; this would cause major problems with the World Series. I expect that a 60-day cooling off period may well be sought.

Yes. However, this time, you have the little issue of a World Series and stranded fans. This would be played all over the evening news and backfire royally on the union. Then management could dig in their heels.

As a SEPTA rider, 90% of it's ridership (Including yours truly) are people w/ no other option. That number is close to 100 when you take away the RR system.

SEPTA can rape Philadelphias simply becuase they [residents] have no choice but to take it. It's not like NYCT which has the Manhattan set with the connections and money to rasie hell.

A respondent on Philly.com wrote this statement [and backed it up with facts and figures] and I wholeheartedly share his feelings; THE TWU IS OUT OF THEIR FRAKIN MINDS!

"Unbelievable. Does this Union live in a bubble? They want 4% raises when many of the rest of us are taking pay CUTS---that is if we're lucky enough to have kept our jobs. Some stats they should consider: 1) The Philadelphia Area experience the largest year-over-year decline in food and energy prices since 1959, with housing experiencing only a modest increases. This means we're in a period of deflation, indicating that without getting a nominal payraise, SEPTA workers have received a payraise in real terms as the money they earned goes farther. The year-over-year decline in CPI was 1% in August, but food and energy were even bigger in Sept at -3.9% and -9% respectively. 2) Philadelphia area wages decreased by 1% year-over-year in August. 3) The Philadelphia Metropolitan area had a 10.7% unemployment rate in August and had lost over 90,800 jobs between Sept '08 and Sept '09. So while the rest of us don't have the job security of a job at SEPTA, we're getting laid off at a greater and greater rate and making less money if we have or get a job, these yahoos want a freakin' 4% payraise!!!!!! And they'll strike during the World Series too? Nobody will cry if you MORONS get fired for striking in the middle of a recession... and the World Series. Get a grip."

These assholes are in la-la-land!

They don't give a shit. Why would they? City Hall and or Fast Eddie in Harrisburg will give them what they want if they pull a stunt like that.

Don't worry thou, Philly has already mulled closing all city libaries other than the one in CC, and I'm sure cuts to the Police, Fire and Schools are not far behind. Maybe giving away the store in union contracts wasn't such a good idea.....

It's sad, becuase most people who ride SEPTA desperately need that service, but again, alot of people view the needs of Inner-City Philadelphia as disposable, especally out here in the suburbs.

If you saw thousands of empty seats at CBP and The Linc next Sunday because of a SEPTA strike, then it would embarass the city and I suspect there would be a massive backlash against the TWU as that would have to be explained to a national TV audience that otherwise would be claiming that "baseball is dying," particuarly by those who don't live anywhere near here.

That looks like my pay at Lincoln Financial. I got NOTHING this year [and survived a MASSIVE purge back in the spring], and it seems that next year I won't get shit either. On top of this, we just got the details on our health benefit plans, and our share of the costs will go up considerably, with increased co-pays and deductibles and increased cost of employees' contribution.

Public sector unions like the TWU gotta bite the bullet like the rest of us in private industry. Their generous current contract is not playing well with the suffering public.

If I was unemployed, I would apply for a job at SEPTA, and take it and like it, unlike these ingrates.

From a reliable source. The strike is not over economic issues, they were going to give them 11-1/2% over 5 years,0, 2 1/2, 3 ,3 & 3 and a $1250.00 signing bonus. The pension was raised a meager amount, but acceptable.

The main issue was that seniority and picking rights of the maintenance employees could not be guaranteed, so an employee would have to work anywhere. SEPTA kept saying "We will be fair with this and do the right thing". This language is not binding and vague for the workers so they went on strike.

Unfair

No I understand. I still am unsure if this was the right way to call the strike, but I guess it was better in the middle of the night versus in the middle of rush hour. But, I do feel for the workers but the public sentiment as usual will not be with them. I hope this gets resiolved soon.

I do have a question, I am not wishing it but how come the Regional Rail employees aren't out in sympathy?

Just curious.

I believe they're covered by railroad laws that prohibit strikes.
