Yes.

1000s are the Siemens-Duewag U2s
2000s are the Siemens SD100s
3000s are the Siemens S70 Avanto low-floors.

Corrections, anyone?

Nope, that's correct. Some more detail:

1001-1014 were the original cars, delivered 1980-1981 (line opened July 1981)

1015-1024 delivered in 1982 for service expansion (double-tracking completed)
1025-1030 delivered 1986 for East Line phase 1 to Euclid
1031-1071 delivered 1988-1990 for East Line extension to El Cajon

2001-2052 delivered 1995-1996 for East Line (now Orange Line) extension to Santee, South Line (now Blue Line) extension to Old Town and later Mission Valley

3001-3011 delivered 2005 (maybe 2004) for East Line (now Green Line) extension from Mission Valley to Grossmont (merges w/ Orange Line)

Nice stuff, Kevin.

When did they begin running 3-car trains?

I don't really know much about the system, but I seem to recall pictures of three car trains from several years ago. Maybe Doc will elaborate for us.

Depends on what's going on.

Blue Line trains (Old Town to San Ysidro) have 3 cars during most of the day, go to 2 cars late nights.

Orange Line trains (12th Imperial to Gillespie Field) have 2 cars during most of the day, 3 cars during rush hours.

Green Line trains (Old Town to Santee) usually have 2 cars at all times.

Exceptions:
1) Padres games at Petco Park (downtown), then both Blue and Orange lines have 3 cars on all trains.
2) Charger games at Qualcomm Stadium (Mission Valley), Green Line have 4 cars for the SD-100s (2000 series) or 3 cars for the S70s (3000 series). Sometimes the U-2s (1000 series) make an appearance on the Green Line as needed for capacity reasons, they also will have 4 cars on them.
