I loved the "Train to the Plane". When I worked the IND extra list, just after sfter spending a two year unrequested stint on the busses, I worked it both out of Howard Beach and 57/6. I think it was probably late 1978 or early 1979. For me, going to work was a pleasure anyway but this work was the cherry on the cake. I probably got to work it a couple of dozen times and as far as I was concerned it wasn't enough. Tooting the horn and blowing by the stations was great. A few times I got the extra board at Howard Beach. When it was snowing I was ordered to take the spare JFK back and forth to Liberty Junction to keep the switches clear. What fun! I wish I could do it all over again.

I remember those years. I worked with you in 5th Avenue Depot (Gleason) as a new Bus Operator.

As my motorman's class later was breaking in for switchman in CIY, iirc, all you guys had been recalled from the buses and booths and were breaking in for the road.

You are right the JFK express was great fun. No pressure; just take the train and go.

Don't forget that until 1988, the A ran express only during rush hours, and that it used filthy graffitti covered cars which crept through some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Brooklyn. The allure of a fast, clean run from JFK to Manhattan which bypassed all the bad neighborhoods was worth the extra $$$.

No, the J ran from 121st to Myrtle, the M ran from Metro to Marcy.

Yard moves had to be made via the Bay Ridge LIRR connection in ENY, the entire Eastern Division was isolated from the rest of the system.

The A gets a bad rap, it is not at all a bad line, especially having worked it late as many times as I have. Only on one occasion, when on the end of an A job out of Lefferts that finished up on Saturday night into Sunday morning on the Euclid-Lefferts shuttle, did an incident occur where an auxiliary officer was beaten unconscious on a train up ahead of mine at Grant Avenue when he tried to stop an already weeded up guy from smoking more on the train, tried to cuff the guy, the guy got irate, the officer tired to pull out his baton, but never got a chance to use it, instead caught a furious set of knuckle sandwiches. Got banged up pretty bad, and was delayed for 30 minutes.
