Had the right of way over everything else on the road. Those held behind red home signals, of course, will think otherwise. Nice while it lasted. |

Some towers still have punch indicators for "JFK".At West 4th Street Tower, when I trained there, I received a print-out of basically a manipulation chart for common moves. It mentioned the levers necessary to route the JFK Express. |

Come in against the wall on 6th; cross over to 8th; opposite coming northbound. Many a night I was held northboud o/s W4 and had to watch that little blue meatball go by first. But when the shoe was on the other foot, priceless. |

If ridership didn't kill it, the 63 Street connection would have in the end; no easy place to turn it in Manhattan anymore without going up Central Park West. |

Posted by randyo on Fri Sep 25 14:20:25 2009, in response to "Take The Train To The Plane", posted by Union Turnpike on Fri Sep 25 12:31:07 2009. I wrote the first timetable for the JFK Express. The then Chief Schedule Maker came up with a set of running times and I suggested doing a physical running time check and he said it wasn't necessary. After the first timetables were printed, we discovered that a JFK had been scheduled to pass an A train on the same track at Utica Av. At that point, a special light train was assigned and I and another schedule maker along with Trainmaster Nat Ford who later became Chief Transportation Officer did a complete running time check in the rush hour and realizing that even a train bypassing stations on the same track as a train stopping at these stations needed the same running time as the train making the stops we rewrote the timetables to reflect the reality of the situation. |

The only exception to the JFK NOT having the right of way over everything else on the road was when the train had to travel to south of Howard Beach on the s/b track; then chamge ends to pull into the station because of a road train. |

I rode it once when I arrived on a late flight at JFK as I didn't want to deal with a late night local A train. We used to watch the JFK Express with envy. It had it's dedicated fleet (33 of them) of clean R-46s and had priority over everyhting else on the road. I remember from time to time you could see it using a 4-car R-46 consist from Jamaica's fleet with the signs displaying S-Special. Anyone remember when the occasional 4-car R-38 would show up on the JFK Express? |

The shuttle bus wasn't free when the JFK Express ran. The fare was $2 when a token was $1. And they were timed to meet the JFK trains so if you came there on an A or C, wait times for the buses were longer. |
