when did R46s get the second storm door handle? |
|
|
Posted by d_mind on Fri Jul 3 19:53:08 2009 Browsing the pics-of-the-day on NYCSubway I noticed this photo. I noticed there's the one handle on the door then. When was the second lower handle added? Was it added for the same reason the M3s/M7s have them? |

The rush of wind pushing the bulkhead door was making them open since the latch was not enough for that extremely heavy door.I was going across the flats (Rockaway) one day on an R44 and the bulkhead door blew open . If a TSS or regular t/o training a new t/o were standing there, he would have been greatly injured or even killed. |

No it was after the 2 signal Maintainer were kill South of Kings Highway Station on the F. The T/O told people on the seen taht the door blow open while leave the station. He tried to close it while moving and he did not see them on the tracks. |

The rush of wind pushing the bulkhead door was making them open since the latch was not enough for that extremely heavy door."Correct about the wind pressure, and the timing is about right. I don't know how many times I went through the 53rd Street Tube with my left foot jammed up against the door to keep it from opening. The real impetus to correct the problem, however, came after the signal maintainer and his helper were killed at Kings Highway (s/b) on the F. The motorman claimed that the storm door blew open and he was trying to close it, and therefore did not see the employees on the roadbed. System Safety mandated a fix after that incident. |

A very versatile tool, those shoe slippers. Had many applications. Jam it cross-wise between the storm door handle and the bulkhead proper for storm door closure. Could even be made into a seat for Conductors in some cabs. |

Pity I didn't read your post before I replied; would have saved me the trouble of answering. One was a helper, btw, not technically a maintainer (the helper did not quite do his job either, or they might both still be alive).I knew the motorman (one of the best from a supervisory/managerial pov), and he was devastated by the incident. I believe he retired as soon as practicable after the incident. Sad, all around. Three lives ruined. |

The safety chain is neatly stowed in its cabinet, there are no dangling barrier springs, and: the electrical connections are on the sides of the coupler (without covers!), instead of on the bottom like today. When and why was that changed? |

The Barrier Springs were added to keep people from falling between cars while in the station. When the train went thought GHO the Box was sealed from some reason on the chains on the R46's but not the R44's. And the main reason why the Electrical connections are not covered is to keep most of the dirt off of them and when rebuilt the were put on the bottom I think becouse they needed less pins to do the same work as the 2 sets of pins. Someone can correct me on this one. |

As a C/R on the (R), my storm door would fly open in the 60th Street Tunnel at the PRECISE moment the speedometer hit 50 MPH. This is a proven fact. |

No, trust me from experience, it does happen. Before the trip, you should make sure the locks are in place, but sometimes those locks are pretty slack, or some end doors the door does not close securely in place, and even have to kinda "door stop" it with a shoe paddle. |

Yes but its not going to fly open with the force that it will knock somebody behind it on their ass. If I were a conductor again, I'd like to be able to get out of my car in a hurry where needed. |

I'm surprised they haven't gone with sliding doors on new trains as the R-62s & 68s have for front storm doors considering the danger associated with these. |

In the late 1980s, one blew open on an northbound F train near avenue X. When the Train Operator reached over to close it, he took his eyes off the road and struck and killed 2 signal maintainers. The secondary latches went on right after that. |

To set the record straight, the bulkhead door flew open like a shot in the incident I described on the flats. In your case, it opened gently since you had the mass of a car in front of you to deflect the wind. |
