Under New Management

I was searching the threads since I last posted last night, and I can't believe none of you guys picked this up. I guess none of you were out and about today.

Say "so long" to the R46's, on the V. Today for the AM rush the line had:

1------------R32
7---------R40/42
5------------R46
13 total trains

Why? Here is where the subject of this post comes in.

General Managers have come to the B division. The "Group General Manager" is the boss of the individual line General Managers. The one who is in charge of this particular area wants R42's exclusively on the V line, R46's exclusively to the R line, of course R46's on the G, and as for the E/F, R160's and the "left overs" (remaining R46 to the F). Naturally with new R160's coming in allowing retirements of the "tin cans", the assignment make-up will be changing frequently. Tomorrow we'll see how well this goal is met on the V. The R had 1 R42 on the AM, don't know about the PM. All 8 "V" "tin cans" came out of Jamaica Yard and the 5 R46's were laid up last night downstairs at CTL and on D3 track between 75th Ave. and Briarwood.

Here is the make-up: 5 Group Genral Managers have individual GM's in charge of:

IRT West: 4 GM's=1, 2, 3 ,7.
IRT East: 3 GM's= 4+GCS, 5, 6.
BMT: 3 GM's= B+Q+Franklin, D, N+W.
IND/BMT: 4 GM's: A+RockPk, C, J+M+Z, L.
IND: 4GM's: E, F+V, G, R.

ENJOY!

Sounds smart to me. The R42's clearly couldn't handle anything but the sleepy Eastern Division and put them on a part-time service that can be avoided.

Makes total sense. The remaining SMEE's in Jamaica should be restricted to weekday only service. They could even get away with running 480' trains if they so chose (but that would bring up all the issues we saw when the slants were put on the C).

Not good for the Continental dispatcher. In the event of a delay in service, or a train that has to go to the yard in the rush, with R46's you can short relay and swap an R for a V and vice versa to avoid an cancelled train. Now you can't because you don't have time to change signs on an R42V to and R42R.

I didn't say that. READ THE POST AGAIN!

There are 13 trains on the V. If all are R40M/42's, there are PLENTY of R32/40M/42's available for service on the E/F. There are more than twice the 130 "tin cans" on the V that are totally assigned to Jamaica. As it is there is an excess of 60 R32's at that yard. So there are still PLENTY of RFW's around.

Once the ABD's start piling up at CTL that'll change... the V,G,R should run the R-160s over the E and F, because it would help CTL run far smoother especially when it comes to what trains are needed. You can easily interchange them.

I can assure you many AM c/r's are pissed. They say they will pick off the line. T/O's are pissed over door enablers. Many of them have been working the V since day 1. They all got spoiled with their nice transverse cabs and decent place to sit.

My take is this: the tin cans are on the way out. More new R160's are going to the F. There has been talk of possible R160's on the R/V, but with the new management structure, the decision rests on the new Group General Manager. Even if not, the R46's would be back on the V since they'll be bumped off the F. Of course later, when replacements for the R46 come in, then they have no choice. But by then, many will probably be retired anyway.

Why not? The E at one time was all R-46.

We can debate the four doors on 60ft vs. on the 75ft cars until the cows come home, and the ability for faster loading/unloading that 60ft cars theoretically provide (40 doors per train vs. 32 doors).

But "need"? This is a case where we have done it before, and there is no real reason why it can't be done again. It would help, though, if passengers moved to the center of the cars and did not congregate around the doors.

One of our Operatives said the 60-footers were only on the V and R today, July 2.

Breakdown was all R-160 on E, R-46 and R-160 on F, all R-32 & R-40M/42 on V and R-32, R-40M/42 plus R-46 on R. Just R-46 on the G.

It looks like there are more Jamaica retirees at Concourse than there were last week. Will check it out again.

With such a huge and sudden R-160 influx, it makes sense the "Tin Cans" (60-footers) will be in the cross-hairs, real quick!

Wait a minute, I rode an R-42 "E" train on this morning's (7/2/2009) AM rush hour, and which I boarded at Roosevelt Avenue toward Chambers Street-WTC. I might add that there were delays on the IND 8th Avenue line on the SB side around 23rd Street and West 4th Street, with track workers checking each of those areas.
