Has anyone heard any rumors or news lately about the TRX?

Oh thanks to Ken's link - now I recall this: the great crescent route.

The problems are an alignment that goes through a lot of basically minimally productive land uses. Additionally, there is resistance to transfers across lines, even to reduce travel time, probably because deviation between actual and scheduled departure and arrival times is significant in too many cases.

Provision for bringing the MNCR New Haven Line into the proposed NJT Midtown terminal, expanded of course, or into an expanded NYP, probably would be a better use of funding.

Anyway, there is a lot on the list with higher priority and greater efficiency using the same infrastructure.

No new developments, and there probably won't be soon. I'm not sure if it's in the capital plan for 209-2013, but even that hasn't been funded fully yet. But IMO, it will be one of the most useful lines in the system as a very functional crosstown in the system.

I agree...living in South Bklyn and working in Jamaica, I can only tell you the commuting nightmare I have...Question...Isn't there a study or something that might connect this to the new freight line being discussed out of Jersey?

I don't think so. The "TRX" really doesn't go anywhere, and it's crosstown ridership would be very light. Except for Brooklyn College, what destination along it's route would generate any real ridership? A nice railfan dream, but not a viable line. The RPA comes out every so often with these massive transit plans that they know will never be built.

Back in the 1970s when I was attending Brooklyn College there were plans to extend the Canarsie Line down to Bedford Avenue, nothing came of that either.

MTA expansion plans, 1971:

The line itself would not gain a lot of ridership (just 176K per day), but it would facilitate getting around in the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn and make it much easier to do. According to the site, the bulk of riders that would use this route would include people in Jackson Heights, the Bronx (near the Hub), the area between the 2/5 and the 3/L, and between the M and the Roosevelt Ave. transit hub. I admit it's not a very high priority item on the MTA's list (especially now), but converting the ROW to include transit use should be looked into when the MTA has money in the future.
