R-32s being sold to Nigeria

I have heard that most of the remaining R-32 cars won't be reefed after all. I heard a deal is being finalized by the country of Nigeria to purchase 232 R-32 cars. They won't be avavilable for shipment until they are retired from service here which is scheduled for December.
I guess it makes more sense for them to sell these cars than dumping them into ther ocean.

Subject: URGENT AND CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS PROPOSAL

DEAR SIR,

I AM MARIAM ABACHA, WIDOW OF THE LATE NIGERIAN HEAD OF STATE, GEN. SANI ABACHA. AFTER HE DEATH OF MY HUSBAND WHO DIED MYSTERIOUSLY AS A RESULT OF CARDIAC ARREST, I WAS INFORMED BY OUR LAWYER, BELLO GAMBARI THAT, MY HUSBAND WHO AT THAT TIME WAS THE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA, CALLED HIM AND CONDUCTED HIM ROUND HIS APARTMENT AND SHOWED HIM 232 AMERICAN RAIL TRANSIT CARS AND HE EQUALLY MADE HIM BELIEVE THAT THOSE CARS ARE FOR ONWARD TRANSFER TO HIS OVERSEAS COUNTERPART FOR PERSONAL FOAMING.

ALONG THE LINE, MY HUSBAND DIED AND SINCE THEN THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN AFTER US, MOLESTING, POLICING AND FREEZING OUR RAILROADS AND EVEN MY ELDEST SON RIGHT NOW IS IN DETENTION. ABOUT OUR RAIL TRANSIT CARS AND SOME VITAL DOCUMENTS. IT WAS IN THE COURSE OF THESE, AFTER THE BURIAL RITE AND CUSTOMS, THAT OUR LAWYER SAW YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS FROM THE PUBLICATION OF THE NIGERIAN BUSINESS PROMOTION AGENCY. THIS IS WHY I AM USING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SOLICIT FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION AND ASSISTANCE TO HELP ME AS A VERY SINCERE RESPONSIBLE PERSON. I HAVE ALL THE TRUST IN YOU AND I KNOW THAT YOU WILL NOT SIT ON THESE RAIL TRANSIT CARS.

I HAVE SUCCEEDED IN CARRYING THE 232 R-32 TYPE RAIL CARS OUT OF THE COUNTRY, WITH THE AID OF SOME TOP GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL, WHO STILL SHOW SYMPATHY TO MY FAMILY, TO A NEIGHBOURING COUNTRY (ACCRA-GHANA) TO BE PRECISE. I PRAY YOU WOULD HELP US IN GETTING THESE RAIL TRANSIT CARS TRANSFERRED OVER TO YOUR COUNTRY. THIS IS ACTUALLY WHAT WE HAVE MOVED TO GHANA.

THEREFORE, I NEED AN URGENT HELP FROM YOU AS A MAN OF GOD TO HELP GET THESE RAIL TRANSIT CARS IN ACCRA GHANA TO YOUR COUNTRY. THESE CARS, AFTER GETTING TO YOUR COUNTRY, WOULD BE SHARED ACCORDING TO THE PERCENTAGE AGREED BY BOTH OF US.PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS MATTER IS STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL AS THE GOVERNMENT WHICH MY LATE HUSBAND WAS PART OF IS STILL UNDER SURVAILLANCE TO PROBE US.

YOU CAN CONTACT ME THROUGH MY FAMILY LAWYER AS INDICATED ABOVE AND ALSO TO LIAISE WITH HIM TOWARDS THE EFFECTIVE COMPLETION OF THIS TRANSACTION ON TEL/FAX N0:xxx-x-xxxxxxx AS HE HAS THE MANDATE OF THE FAMILY TO HANDLE THIS TRANSACTION.

THANKS AND BEST REGARD

MRS. MARIAM ABACHA

Nah, I got an email from their oil minister's banker earlier today. They want to deposit the money into my bank account so that I can buy all of those R32's for them, take delivery and evade VAT taxes. It MUST be real, because he said "May God bless you abundantly for your assistance." And I've got the room to store them here until the tow truck arrives. :)

Almost true - almost. First, the number of cars involved will likely be less than 200. Second, the cars will not be sold but will be given to the Nigerian Transport Ministry. Third, for the deal to be done, The cars will have to be fitted with new trucks and be re-equipped to be pulled behind the diesel locos that GE is selling to the Nigerian Gov't. The hook is that all the modifications must be made in NY State before the cars are shipped. So it's not a done deal yet.

Looks like no sale for profit, although it might help with jobs. If it works out, that's great. The R32s go from EMUs to push-pull - who saw THAT coming?! :)

Indeed - some Metroliners too, which survive as cab cars on AMTK runs, especially the Keystone and Springfield shuttle.

I wonder about the inverse operation - going from push-pull to EMUs. I can't think of any examples. Anyone else with more encyclopedic knowledge?

Yes, I've never actually read (other than a skim) any of them. The bad grammar and utter stupidity makes them unreadable. People do fall for it, though. If you think about it, using a spam-bot to send 16,000 (or more) of them an hour might generate two suckers in a month. Still profitable, LOL.

Took less time than you'd think. I just went to a website and copied a sample 419 letter and replaced the words "money" with "rail transit cars".
