New Jersey + SEPTA trackmap (v5) released!

Posted by checkthedoorlight on Sat May 9 23:56:44 2009

fiogf49gjkf0d
Here it is, version 5 of my railroad track map showing a to-scale (tracks and platform sizes are enlarged for easier viewing, but the layout is globally to-scale) layout of every track, every station, every interlocking and every yard in the New Jersey Transit & SEPTA rail systems, as well as coverage of EVERY additional freight & passenger railroad in New Jersey, from Phillipsburg to Cape May.

The primary reason that I started on these to-scale trackmap projects was as an educational experience. Being a railfan who pays attention to the smallest detail, I wanted to have a resource available to me that would show the layout of the lines that I love to ride. Since there was nothing like this available, I took on the challenge to do it myself, and my project was directly inspired by Peter Dougherty's New York City Subway trackmaps. I started this project over 3 years ago, and my original intention was to only do Metro-North, but once I completed that and started realizing that even the Danbury and Waterbury lines connect to far off places, I wanted to keep expanding. This version of the map expands coverage into Delaware and just across the Maryland border.

Once again I must thank the readers of railroad.net and subchat.com who reached out to help this project become the best it can be, since this map really could NOT have been completed with the accuracy and detail that it has without your help. Thanks especially to Jersey Mike, who walked me through the entire SEPTA system, a railroad which I've only actually been a customer on once. I will ask you again to help out, by enjoying this map, but also informing me if you see something that is not right (and this time, I KNOW that there's plenty of stuff on there that I didn't get 100% accurate). I do not mind creative criticism, so don't be afraid to comment, since I will continue to update this map, in order to get it as accurate as possible.

The usual disclaimer - Although this map was created with the intention of accurately protraying the track layout of New Jersey Transit, SEPTA and surrounding railroads, this is NOT an official NJT/Amtrak/SEPTA track map, and was produced with no official or unofficial endorsement or connection to any railroad, and should not be considered or treated as an official NJT/Amtrak/SEPTA document. Although some people may see releasing a map like this as a security risk, I should remind you that just about all of the data on this map could be collected by either looking out the front or side windows of a train, or with pre-existing aerial imagery and photos (I was going to rrpicturearchives.net, live.local.com and google earth CONSTANTLY while working on this project), and that actual security-sensitive locations (fueling pads, power stations, entrances to restricted areas, etc) have not been protrayed on here. I know that some railfan sites have expressed interest in using my finished product - this will be allowed and encouraged, as long as the proper creation credit and disclaimer of it being an unofficial map are included. Like all professional maps, there are small intentional but subtle errors included in the layout, so if somebody tries to rip it off, I will know.

After taking a long vacation from Adobe Illustrator, I will be returning scope to East of Hudson, with a new release featuring all of Southern New England and New York on the horizon.

Enjoy!

Aw... what’s wrong with opening 12mb in your browser?
Seriously this is another fine production. Thank you very much for the hard work.

For my offering I looked at Local Live and find that NJT MMC has:
-12kv25c from NEC track 1 to the Waterfront connection, also to tracks 11A/B/C/D (missing line at the turnpike) and then through to shop tracks 4 & 5. Also the east end of 11A/B/C/D fans out a bit differently than shown.
-25kv60c from the Waterfront connection through tracks 25A/B and all of the two connections to M&E track 2 The crossover at the east end of 25A/B to 11A/B/C/D doesn’t have poles in the right place for wiring it. So I wonder how the 25kv equipment gets moved over and tested outside the shop? With a connection the lead could have been made switchable.
-the rest of the MMC tracks don’t appear to be electrified.

Bill

Cool! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I didn't know that the tracks from Hoboken to Harmon Cove were severed after they rerouted those lines through Secaucus Junction.

sometime after I get back from Seattle (aka later this summer). All of the trackage is in place, but most of it still needs to be labeled. FYI releasing the NYCS map is only the FIRST step in a big project I have in mind.....

Well, if x/y dimension is not it, then either you are going to convert these to a 3 dimensional map utilizing the z plane, or you are going to do a map that involves the 4th dimension and has full historical details, or start doing ones of different time periods.

Any of which would be awesome. Your maps rock, when you first released the Metro North/LIRR ones they renewed my interest in those railroads!

Rich --

Great stuff as always from you. Your trackmaps have been (for me at least) among the top take-aways from these boards over the years.

One typo I noticed -- the abandoned station in Bloomfield was "Rowe Street" and not "Rove Street".

4th dimension (i.e. a 1904 trackmap layer, 1967, etc). Everybody start getting your history books and historic photos ready, cuz I'm gonna need some major assistance on this!

I still need to ease back into things though (and get the 2009 version completed), so be patient.
