Look out the front of the train I think the tunnel shifts just a bit so the track has too, I wonder if they could've shaved the tunnel walls to straighten out the track but the trains don't go fast enough to make it of any safety concern. |

Look out the front of the train I think the tunnel shifts just a bit so the track has tooIt looks like it, although it seems to be a short, sharp shift. Although it sort of begs the question of why the tunnel seems to shift. I assume that they had some good reason to do it, unless it was just an oops that once done wasn't worth correcting. I wonder if they could've shaved the tunnel walls to straighten out the track but the trains don't go fast enough to make it of any safety concern. Yes the speeds are quite low, since the incline is quite steep, and trains already reduced speed to clear the timed signals on the downgrade. |

I wonder if it has something to do with the original plans for the line. The Steinway tunnels were originally built for trolley cars - there was supposed to be a loop on the Queens side which I do not believe was ever built, although the tunnel was but never saw revenue trolley service. The Flushing el was simply connected to the already existing and unused trolley tunnel. |

The tunnel curves as it shifts under 50 Avenue along the street grid. It was built there as the builders of the interurban line choose 50 Avenue for the route. |

If I recall my history of the Steinway Tunnels, "trolley" car service did operate in the tunnel very briefly. The reason I put "trolley" in quotes is because there was a very small number of cars (in fact I think only 2) that were specially equipped with mini pantographs similar the those on the roof of the NYCRR electric engines that operated into GCT that collected current from an overhead third rail that was secured to the roof of the tunnel. |

From this:Whether due to misalignment or loss of control of the shields, it has not been established, but a slight kink can be observed in the south tube, just east of shaft #3. |

I remember reading somewhere a while ago that the Steinway tunnels were built from the opposite ends towards the middle of the East River (as opposed to building it in one direction from one starting place), and that jog in the tunnels is where the tunnels joined. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. |

It was mentioned either on this board, or in sub-talk, or in a Transit Museum tour, that when they were building the tunnel from both ends, when they met they were off my a couple of inches (feet), that's why the bump. |

That's quite possible and probable, as I've seen that occur on projects that were aligned with much more sophisticated and precise equipment.your pal, Fred |
