Fred and G1Ravage are correct.The new South Ferry station for all practical purposes is a branch off the Chaining Route V. For civil engineering chaining purposes the new South Ferry station branch is identified as Chaining Route VA. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

However, since the 7 line is next to receive CBTC, the line's zero may be moved, like they did with the Canarsie line. In conjunction with installing CBTC on the Canarsie line, the zero was moved to the bumper blocks at the west end of the 8th Avenue station. A similar situation would likely happen on the Flushing line. |

Also in conjunction with installing CBTC on the Canarsie line, routes Q (zero at 6th Avenue), QW (same zero), and P (partly independent, partly chained to the Fulton El zero) were merged into a new route Q, with the zero at 8th Avenue.I suspect that when Flushing Extension construction is complete and CBTC is installed, the zero would be moved, and routes C and CA would be merged. |

Re 4 and 7: The IRT practice was to number the tracks inside outand backwards 4-2-1-3. If there is a need for a second piece of signal apparatus within the same 100-foot chaining section, then the numbers repeat 8-6-5-7. So "7" is the same as "3". Look around, there is probably something with a plate of 2243 nearby. Btw, last digit of 0 or 9 was used for special conditions such as junction boxes. |

The problem with IRT track numbering is that MOW uses a different system from RTO. In IRT signal Dept numbering the S/B tracks have even numbers and the N/B tracks have odd numbers. Thus the S/B lcl tk is Tk 4, the S/B exp tk is Tk 2, the N/B exp tk is Tk 1 and the N/B lcl tk is Tk 3. RTO merely designates the tracks from west to east as 1, 2 ,3 and 4. On IRT signal plates, the last digit of the signal number is the track number but these numbers are based on the MOW track numbering system rather than RTO so it gets a bit confusing. Middle tracks, spurs and signals in reverse dirctions carry last digits that are unrelated to the actual track number and I'm not sure how that works. Maybe someone out there who works for NYCT signals can explain it better. Branch lines usually carry the numbers of the mainline tracks that lead to them. Thus Bway tracks N/O 96 St are 1 and 4 while the Lenox WPR tracks are numbered 2 and 3. On the East Side, Jerome tracks are 1 and 4 while Pelham tracks are 2 and 3. This despite the fact that the service to Pelham is local and the services up to Jerome and WP Rd are express. Self contained lines like Flushing and the Manhattan els are merely numbered 1 and 2 an all middle tracks are called "M." Again the signals use a different numbering system with which I am not really familiar. |

I posted an explanation of IRT track numberings including a discrepancy between the way MOW numbers tracks as opposed to the way RTO numbers tracks which is 1, 2, 3 and 4 from west to east. |

At least the LION's chaining system makes sense.LION starts in the corner of the lower level. That is ZERO. The lion then measures the number of actual inches that the mane lion runs. You can see my numbers here. First number is the inches from zero in running inches, the second number (after the colon) is the number of inches in elevation from Zero. ROAR |

I never worked the IRT road although as a M/M i did pick a Pelham job that I nevr had a chance to work since I was made a T/D 2 days after I picked. I did work the IRT from the Command center however working as many IRT tricks as I could as vacation relief and then as Lex Av console Dispatcher from early 1975 to mid 1976. |

Utility rooms and a staircase to the inner loop of old SF. |
