BMT Rector Street Station - Provision for entrances |
|
Posted by RedbirdR33 on Wed Apr 13 20:54:48 2005 Here's another item that might be of interest to station fans.It is from a construction history of the Church Street-Trinity Place Line by the late Dave Rogoff. It appeared in the February 1967 issue of the New York Division Bulletin. Construction Route #5 Broadway-4 Avenue Subway Section 2 Rector Street Station - There is a sealed and abandoned entrance to the basement of the present (1967) American Express Building on the uptown platform as well as a never used space for a second set of entrances and exits on the same platform which would have opened onto Exchange Alley. The station was built to 7 (BRT Steel) cars lengths and was lengtthened to 8 (BRT Steel) car lengths in 1927. It is curreently (1967) scheduled to be lengthened to 10 (60 foot) car lengths. Is there a stairway at the S/E at Rector St on the BMT?I've noticed a stairway that seems to be open only for the morning rush hour. |

Not if you want to go to Essex on Coney/Downtown for a thick sandwich. It is right outside this entrance near Morris Street. |

There is an HXT wheel on the Downtown side too, but towards the center of the platform, about 250 feet from the main booth. It is not located at the far south end like the Uptown HEET entrance from Morris Street. |

There are 2 HEETs, and the entrance goes to publice sidewalk level (not to a building lobby or basement level). So it sould be open full time, but it's not. What a waste of money constructing this entrance in the early 1990's. |

There are a lot of entrances with HEET's that are only open part-time. NYCT seems to be trying to shift to full-time unattended entrances, but there's been a lot of resistance. |

Maybe NYCT is afraid that in some places if something happens to a customer, no one will discover them until early morning. |

What if something happens to a customer while walking the length of the platform to an exit that is open, or while walking on the street from the closed entrance to an entrance that is open? |

If it happened on the platform, then it happened inside the system. If it happened on the street, then it's just as bad as its happening inside the system. The headline will look something like this: "Man Stabbed while Searching for Open Subway Entrance" -- and NYCT will (rightfully) be held responsible in the public's view. |
